Notes!
Who are the People of Irving School?
Throughout this school year, we are going to explore just who makes up our Irving Community! Every student, staff member, and family is important at Irving School.
As we strive to create a strong sense of belonging, students will be engaged in:
- reflecting on their identity as well as the other People of Irving
- connecting to others in our community
- contributing to our classroom and school communities at Irving
Each newsletter will now highlight some of the People of Irving so we can become more familiar with, and develop a greater understanding for, the many individuals who make up Irving School. Here are a few new faces to Irving School.
Mr. Wickey
Mrs. Bursak
I am married and have two sons who are elementary students themselves and in first and third grade. We love to take family road trips around the Midwest and view beautiful nature scenery. They also don't mind coming with me to check out new sculpture parks and art shows.
I am so excited to be here at Irving and see all the young artists grow and create! I look forward to an exciting year.

Irving Elementary Homework Survey and Responses
The results of the parent homework survey are in! Thank you so much for taking time to share your experience and ideas with us. Here is a summary of the big take-aways from the survey:
What do you feel is an appropriate amount of homework for your child’s grade level?
76.7% responded 10-20 minutes in addition to the required reading minutes
Can your child complete homework on their own without your help or supervision?
23.3% - Yes
26.7% - No
50% - Sometimes
What could teachers do to make the homework process better and less stressful for your child? (Top 4 choices)
77.4% - Make sure my child understands the homework
64.5% - Give parents guidance on how to help with homework and how much to help
54.8% - Make sure my child has written down the homework assignment
48.4% - Give clearer instructions to students about homework
As a staff, we are reviewing the survey results, looking at available research, and creating a more universal homework expectation for our community. We truly value the input of families, students and staff. Our goal is to have our universal homework expectations rolled out at the start of Quarter 2. Classroom teachers will communicate any updates or changes to their homework expectations and procedures within the next few weeks.
If you are interested in looking deeper into what the research is saying, check out this article from Reading Rockets Key Lessons: What Research Says About the Value of Homework.

Building Our Community!
This past week, the entire school community reviewed what it means to be RESPONSIBLE, SAFE, and ENGAGED at Irving School. Specifically, on the playground, in the cafeteria, and in the hallway. As a school, we discussed the Eagle Expectations in our classroom community circles after watching several video presentations from Ernie. In our Community, the People of Irving use . . .
■ Kind words
■ Calm bodies
■ Focused minds
■ Watching eyes
■ Listening ears
■ Inside voices
■ Walking feet
■ Helping hands
■ Problem Solving
