Due to Ms. Merchant’s Illness, we are cancelling both evening concerts Monday and Tuesday.

K-5th students will be performing their holiday songs at their parties on Thursday. Teachers will direct and they will post videos on Bloomz. Parents coming to watch 1st-5th will enter at the cafeteria doors and head to the gym during the party time. Kinder parents will receive information from their child’s teacher on Bloomz.

Your child may wear an (ugly or just festive) holiday sweater on Wednesday, December 18. Let’s celebrate the season in style! Jeans are acceptable on this day.

Secondary students (Grades 7th-9th) will have final exam week December 16th-19th. 7-9th graders only will be dismissed and need to be picked up by 1:15.

Elementary will run normal schedule 7:45-3:05.

Every year our 5th graders participate in a book club read of A Christmas Carol. Through a gallery walk, students are able to learn about the history of London, England during the 1800’s and the vast differences in the lives of the rich and poor. Knowing the background and author’s purpose of a story really helps students draw deeper meaning from their reading. The culmination of this unit is the best part- where students get to perform a reader’s theater version of this classic to enhance their reading fluency and inflection. The costumes are just the cherry on top!

During the month of December many classrooms are participating in a read-aloud initiative to offer students a bit of perspective. Teachers are playing the part of Charles Dickens by giving students a literary experience through the eyes of book characters. Researchers support the idea that literature is one of the best ways to teach children empathy. Books are being selected that meet at least one of the following suggestions:

1. Characters that aren’t immediately likeable
2. Settings from another country or culture
3. Characters who face a big challenge
4. Any book that helps our students empathize with another point of view
