Weekly Update: Cake Boss Edition
Thursday, January 28th, 2021
Dear Families,
What a great week! We were so excited to see everyone back at school. Time was spent focusing on remembering routines, reuniting with classmates, redecorating classrooms and reviewing work completed during the Remote Learning. We did notice that many students were tired (happy, but tired!): please remember that change can be stressful (even when it is a positive change) and that the move from in-person to remote learning and back again certainly has an impact on the mood and level of fatigue of both children and grown ups. We hope that you enjoy the long weekend (tomorrow is a PA Day), and that your children have lots of opportunity to enjoy the snow, and recharge their batteries.
Thank you to all of the families who participated in the Cake Boss Challenge (Version 2.0). There were over 100 entries -- if somehow your child's photo got missed when we were putting together the slide show/video, please email Mme Peart, and we will ensure that it is published next week!
The cakes were judged by a "neutral third party" who does not work at or attend the school...it was extremely difficult to select the 2021 Cake Boss Champions, because the cakes were ALL quite amazing! Nonetheless, the following students have earned the honour of being acknowledged as an École James R. Henderson 2021 Cake Boss:
Most Original:
Kindergarten Cake Boss: Theodore S.

Junior Cake Boss: Faith S.
Intermediate Cake Boss: Gabriel H.

Free menstrual hygiene products available in Limestone schools
École James R. Henderson will offer free menstrual hygiene products to students to remove barriers and ensure equitable access for all. All female washrooms and gender-neutral washrooms in École James R. Henderson will have menstrual hygiene products in easily accessible locations for students in need, beginning on Monday, February 1st. The products are free to students. Students may take items for use at school, or at home, as needed. Classroom teachers will ensure that students are aware of this new change in practice.
Access to menstrual products can be a barrier for many students. Studies show that one in seven young women and non-binary people in Canada will miss some school because they don't have access to menstrual hygiene products, largely because they cannot bear the financial burden of purchasing their own. Other times, students forget to plan ahead or find themselves in an emergency situation.
Lifetouch School Photography: Ordering School Photos
Due date for photo orders: Friday, February 12, 2021. Over 90% of parents are ordering online. These finished photo packages will still be mailed to the school. Orders placed after this deadline will be subject to a $5.99 shipping and handling fee and will be mailed to their home addresses, which they need to provide when ordering.
Lifetouch will be in touch with the school later to estabish a date for photo retakes/absent students. This will likely not be until the spring. Thanks for your patience!
Indigo Girls Group Information:
Indigo Girls Kingston is excited to announce the start of 2021 girls clubs!
Indigo Girls Group is an organization run by young women for young women. In a non-pandemic world, IGG facilitates weekly after-school girls' clubs in schools in the Kingston area. Indigo Girls Kingston educates and engages girls in grades 4-8 in discussions about current topics facing girls today. Girls clubs foster a safe space for learning and analysis of topics such as self-care, anti-oppression, mental well-being, women in STEM, and much more. These subjects and methods of delivery promote personal growth, increased self-esteem, and mental and physical well-being.
After exploring alternatives to safely accommodate the current circumstances brought on by Covid-19, we have decided to create virtual weekly modules for girls to complete at their own pace. Each module will focus on a societal theme affecting young women and will include videos, discussions and interactive activities.
Modules will be released at indigogirlsgroup.com under ‘Kingston Branch’ each Friday starting on February 12th 2021 for 7 weeks.
