Thinking Maps
Each week, teachers will be training students on Thinking Maps. Thinking Maps help students organize thoughts. Students will use Thinking Maps as a pre-writing activity. Next week, our teachers will be training students on the Bubble Map. Please see the attached information so you can learn more about how these maps are used. The bubble map is used to help us describe something and is a great tool for pre-writing. Please see some of the pictures of Circle Maps that our teachers and students worked on last week:
Adams also wants to send a huge congratulations to Mrs. Flemer’s, Mrs. Montes’ and Mrs. Brown’s class for perfect attendance during week one. Students received a prize on Monday. Each week, we will recognize classrooms with the best attendance. The overall attendance rate for Adams during the first week was 97%. Increasing the overall attendance rate is a focus for Adams Elementary this year.
Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.
Counseling Corner
At Adam's Elementary, we encourage our teachers to build community circles in their classrooms. Community circles are a tool where teachers have students sit in a circle and then pass around a mouthpiece, and each student has a turn sharing their thoughts and feelings about various topics. Community circles build communities of trust and respect and allow students to express themselves. As a result, students can identify with their peers. Community Circles prioritize relationships and connectedness by integrating moments of reflection, positive interactions, and appreciation, crafting the climate and culture Adams Elementary is striving for—one in which everyone in the room feels they belong to a safe and caring community of learners, where they are valued and able to learn and work together productively.

Attendance
Did you know? Research shows that chronically absent students (students with 10% absences over the school year = 18 absences) are less likely to read on grade level by 3rd grade, are more likely to score lower on standardized tests, get suspended in middle school, and are at least four times more likely to not complete high school.
