For Jared Meads, Erin Piper, and Matt Ryan, the 2021-2022 School Year proved extra challenging as all three educators took on additional work in the form of administrative internships. These internships, formally known as the TCS Administrative Mentoring Program, allowed Meads, Piper, and Ryan time away from their base school to shadow principals at other schools across the school system. Did you know that nearly 1/5 of TCS students participate in some form of athletics? That was just one of many insights provided by TCS Athletics Director Lance Walker at the June 2022 Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce Luncheon. As keynote speaker, Walker gave a 30,000 scan of Hewitt-Trussville Athletics. In addition to sharing stats on the sheer volume of student-athletes (1,015 to be exact), Walker indicated that HTMS/HTHS teams combined to participate in a total of 1,044 competitions this past school year. Though school is out, learning remains in full-swing in various corners of Trussville City Schools. One such example: Summer Literacy Camp 2022. Students from across Trussville who need extra assistance in the subject of reading - or students who just want to become more proficient - have converged on Paine Elementary School's campus for this annual event. District Reading Specialist Mrs. Kelly McGough manages the Summer Literacy Camp each year.

Trussville City Schools hosted the Alabama Association of School Nurses (AASN) Annual Conference at Hewitt-Trussville High School June 9-10. School nurses from across the state attended the conference to network with colleagues, visit with exhibitors, and learn from experts in several health-related areas. This was the 50th such conference for AASN. It closed with an update and motivational presentation from LaBrenda Marshall, Nurse Manager for the Alabama State Department of Education. -Submitted

The Trussville City Schools Foundation and Trussville City Schools Athletic Foundation have announced Saturday, August 13, 2022, as the date for the annual Paws For a Cause. Tickets go on sale July 13th for this evening event - which will be held at the Trussville Entertainment District. A Trussville-grown band, Dixie Krystal, will open the night. Sponsorships remain available. Anyone interested should email director@tcsf.org

The Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE)'s Summer Learning Challenge Planning Team wants to help reduce the dreaded "summer slide.” As such, it hopes to prepare our students for the upcoming academic year through summer learning opportunities. The Alabama Summer Learning Challenge officially kicked this past May. All Alabama K-12 students and parents can use these fun learning resources this summer. Freshmen Orientation for the Class of 2026 has been scheduled for Thursday, August 4, 2022, from 9:00 AM till 12:00 PM. This is a come-and-go *non-mandatory* event where 9th graders will receive a hard copy of their schedules and be able to follow the schedule throughout the school to locate classes. They will also be able to find/access their lockers. Again, this is not a required event; just a courtesy for incoming freshmen. The first few days of the year school year are all about helping students adjust to their schedules and to the high school environment in general. Three Hewitt-Trussville Cybersecurity students have been named as Finalists or Scholars by the National Cyber Scholarship Foundation (NCSF). The three students are: Trevor Warren (Scholar); Carter Small (Finalist [not pictured]); and Drew Glidewell (Finalist). Mrs. Erin Elseroad, Computer Science/Math Teacher at HTHS, guided the three students as they completed this process. To become a Finalist or Scholar - as designated by NCSF - students competed in various cybersecurity challenges/simulations in a points-based program. Finalist/Scholar status means Warren, Carter, and Glidewell demonstrated great proficiency in the fast-growing, in-demand field of cybersecurity. The Hewitt-Trussville Middle School (HTMS) Dance Team traveled to The Plains this past week - and has brought trophies home to Trussville. The Dance Team participated in a regional summer camp where they learned new techniques, engaged in team-building activities, and even interacted with Aubie! Congratulations to Hewitt-Trussville High School Drum Major Lester Harbison for being selected as a conducting finalist for the Jacksonville State University Drum Major and Spirit Camp Conducting Competition. Harbison is a rising senior and a first year Drum Major for the HTHS Band. The camp and conducting competition were comprised of students from all over Alabama and Georgia.
