Congratulations to our students who recently submitted edTPA! The CEPS had a 95.9% pass rate! GREAT JOB!

What is edTPA? edTPA is a performance-based, subject-specific assessment and support system used by teacher preparation programs throughout the United States to emphasize, measure and support the skills and knowledge that all teachers need from Day 1 in the classroom.

My name is Trey Landman and I am from Birmingham, Alabama. I am a Family and Consumer Science major. I went to Cornerstone Christian School and grew up in Shelby County, AL. I come from a big, mixed family and I am the youngest of 7. My mom was always an advocate for FCS and held every officer title you could in high school and started competing in cooking competitions when she was 8 years old. She taught me that FCS was more than just cooking and sewing though. It was about teaching valuable life skills. Most importantly though, it is so much more than a classroom inside of a school, it is a close knit family just wanting the best for people.

My time at JSU has been the best part of my life so far. The overall friendliness and happiness of people I have met here is the exact reason I chose to enroll at JSU. Here I have met lifelong best friends and relationships that will last through my professional career. Before coming to JSU I struggled continuously on what my purpose in life was, I just knew I wanted to help people. Within the first month of stepping foot into the FCS department I felt at home. I feel like I can express my creativity and passion to help people who are in need, and I am now capable to do something about it.

In my short time in the department, I have been able to experience so many new things. I’ve been able to work as an ambassador alongside my talented classmate, Abigail Hernandez. Together we worked hard this semester, so we were able to go to schools and talk to students about what FCS encompasses and our program at JSU to kids who have never heard of JSU. This month I was elected Student President for AAFCS Alabama Affiliate. I am excited to work with the state and many students throughout the state as well. JSU has offered me so many great opportunities I would have never experienced anywhere else, and I cannot wait to see what the end of my college career has to offer me. My goal is to inspire and I hope to help as many people as I can along the way!

It’s Autism Acceptance Month!

It's student survey time. To make a tedious task more enjoyable we encouraged our students to attend a "Pop-In" event with prizes, food, games, and refreshments. Everyone had a blast!

The CEPS PENning ceremony celebrates our students and honors our Cooperating Teachers. The CEPS Office of Clinical Experiences works hard to make this an evening to remember.

The Education Career Fair wrapped up with over 200 JSU CEPS teacher candidates networking with over 70 school systems followed by afternoon on-the-spot interviews. Mrs. Becca Williams, Career Advisor, would like to thank all those who stepped in to bring this day to a successful close - Christy Horton Mobbs, Morgan Pike, Tricia Nelson, Meredith Garrison, the collaboration & TEAMWORK at its finest! Shout out to Kaitlin Thompson for sharing today to make sure all went smoothly & to JSU Office of Clinical Experiences for coordinating 200+ interns for staggered arrival during the morning browse.

Dr. Sarrell is a lifelong resident of Cleburne County, Alabama, where she attended Ranburne High School and then earned a Bachelor’s in elementary education from Jacksonville State University. Later she attended the University of West Alabama for two advanced education degrees followed by the University of Alabama for a degree in Instructional Leadership and a doctorate in mathematics education.

Sarrell joined the JSU family in August 2020 as an Assistant Professor in Curriculum and Instruction where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate literacy and math related course work. Sarrell currently serves as Literacy Block Coordinator and successfully implemented two community service projects in the 2022-2023 academic year: “Cocky Takes on the ACAP” with Cleburne County Middle School and “Legacy of Literacy” with Weaver Elementary School.

Sarrell and her husband, Warren, have three sons – Branson (13), Wren (6), and Trea (3). Sarrell is active in her church and community and enjoys spending free time outdoors with her family.
