The annual college/IB/ICAP meetings are specifically focused on the requirements, deadlines of the IB Diploma, the IB/ICAP program, and the college application process for attending a four-year college. Ms. Nino-Sears (IB Coordinator) and Ms. Ignaitis/Ms Yeager (College/Career Counselors) present specific information and a different focus for each grade.

Meetings are for students and parents.

All GRADE LEVEL MEETINGS will be:

• Presented in person (English speaking in Carrington Hall)

• Presented separately for Spanish speaking parents/guardians in the MPR

• SLIDES will be Posted on the SHS College and Career website

• Links will be available in the Weekly Newsletter

These GPA-boosting habits may not only help you succeed in high school but in college and beyond.

At many colleges, your grade-point average (GPA) is one of the most important factors in your application, along with the academic rigor of high school and course load. Even if you don’t have perfect grades, many colleges like to see significant improvement or a steady upswing in your GPA over time. Here are 14 strategies that may help you achieve a higher GPA this year.

GET AHEAD IN CLASS

• Take notes.

• Sit near the front.

• Speak up. Ask questions and join discussions.

• Improve your reading and writing skills.

GET ORGANIZED

• Write assignments down.

• Prioritize your study tasks. Take care of your studying and school assignments before beginning other activities if you can. This will help you avoid procrastination and do your most important tasks first.

• Develop a study schedule. Time management experts and college professors alike have long recommended a daily study schedule.

STUDY EFFECTIVELY

• Don't multi-task. The data shows that multitasking just doesn't work.

• Quiz yourself. Research shows that self-testing, such as with flashcards, helps students retain knowledge more effectively.

• Vary your study locations. This keeps your brain alert and allows better retention of the material.

• Space it out. According to an American Psychological Association article, research shows that spacing out study sessions over a period of time rather than cramming right before a test improves long-term memory.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

• Get enough sleep.

• Reward yourself.

• Ask for help.

First Alarm Fire Camp is a free 2-day daytime fire experience camp designed to help ignite the spark in any girl who might be considering a career in the fire service. Our instructor cadre is entirely staffed by female firefighters because if you see it, you may realize you can actually be it! The South County Teen Leadership Council run through the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League offers high school students a free program that provides mentoring, travel conferences, field trips, leadership and organizes community service projects.

Weekly meetings are from 4-6pm in Redwood City
