A few words from Mr. Jelks...
Dear LIS Families,
I am thrilled to share a glimpse of the successful Find Your Fit event that took place on January 29th. The day started with students immersing themselves in hands-on activities at career stations, exploring diverse sectors from Air Pilot to Web Designers. Specialized zones focused on Health and Technology provided additional insights into professions such as General Practitioner and Software Engineers.
Guided by Find Your Fit Tour Presenters, students later navigated labor market information stations, gaining valuable insights into specific occupations. The event not only fostered enthusiasm for career exploration but also promoted diversity and inclusion through anti-bias activities.
In the spirit of promoting diversity and inclusion, students are actively participating in anti-bias activities, with in-depth discussions and insightful questions. Furthermore, we encourage students to attend Black History Month short video screenings in the library every Friday during long recess, open to all students.
Lastly, please note that there is a Professional Development Day scheduled for February 5th and 6th. We appreciate your ongoing support in helping our students navigate their educational journey and plan for their future careers.

The Outer Limits
It’s time again to prepare for our yearly drama festival at LIS!
Ladysmith Intermediate School will be presenting a week-long science fiction drama festival called The Outer Limits which runs from May 13th to 17th with shows happening during school hours. Each class will be performing two plays with voice & physical acting, props, sets and costumes. Each performance runs anywhere from 40 to 60 minutes which includes a short intermission to allow cast and set pieces to change from one story to the next.
Every student in the school will be involved in the festival whether they are cast or crew. Cast roles range from leads to large & small supporting characters with lines that need to be memorized. About a quarter of the students in each class will become the crew, which includes lighting, visuals, stage managers and front-of-house positions. The last term fine arts mark will be an assessment of how well students performed their role/position in their plays.
Two rounds of auditions for each class begins the week of February 12th to figure out who best fits each role. All students are encouraged to audition, even if they hope for a crew position. Paper copies of the audition scripts will be sent home starting Wednesday, February 7th for students to practise. (Memorization of the audition scripts is not necessary but encouraged, since lines for the full play will need to be memorized by early April.) You can also find these audition scripts online at https://pitchblackdrama.weebly.com/the-outer-limits.html
All rehearsals will take place during school hours in fine arts periods. More information about performances will be shared in April.
A big thank you to all the PAC for funds to rent headset microphones and lighting for our show. Their funds have also allowed us to purchase a high quality wireless handheld microphone that will be used in The Outer Limits, future drama productions, and assemblies & presentations. Also, thanks to all of your donations from our Winter Concert performances, we purchased a stage-level lighting system that will also be used by our students in our show. A big thank you to all!
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by sending me an email at rob.michalopoulos@sd68.bc.ca.
Much appreciated,
Mr. Michalopoulos
PacificSport hosts XploreSportZ program in Ladysmith from February 7 until March 6, 2024 from 3-4:30pm in the Frank Jameson Community Centre. Students ages 6 to 12 years are invited.
PacificSport VI’s XploreSportZ program introduces kids to FUNdamental sport skill development through discovery and play. Qualified coaches and leaders deliver sport basics and help children celebrate physical activity – this program is meant as an introduction to sport and is a non-competitive environment.
Coaches will provide accommodations for all experience levels so participants can learn and develop skills based on their own starting point. Each of the sessions will feature a different sport; some traditional such as soccer, or unique such as Tae Kwon Do or tumbling. Final sport schedule to be determined. All equipment will be provided.
Anti-Biased Film Festival
The Fourth installment of our Anti-Bias Film Festival, students had the opportunity to view the short film titled "Love has no labels." and participate in a question and answer session.
This video spreads a beautiful message of love, acceptance, and unity. Through heartfelt lyrics and captivating visuals, it emphasizes that love transcends race, age, religion, and societal norms. The video showcases diverse relationships, portraying neighbors and best friends from different backgrounds and religions. It emphasizes the importance of love and reinforces the idea that all families, regardless of their differences, deserve equal respect and recognition. This inspiring video serves as a reminder that love is love, and it knows no boundaries.

Attendance
We ask parents/guardians to call the school before 9:00 am at (250) 245-3351 or email Info.LI@sd68.bc.ca to notify the school of your child’s absence. Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
