A Message from the Administrative Team
Hi WJHS Families,
At WJHS, we have four social workers and two psychologists who support students with their social emotional needs. Our social workers at WJHS are assigned to teams every year and although there is some crossover, especially in 8th grade, please consider your team’s social worker as the point-person for your children. If you know your child has been working with another social worker and continues to do so, please continue reaching out to this person.
For the first time this year, our psychologists will begin looping grades in order to provide continuous support for students as they move through WJHS. Julie Nesheim is working with 7th grade students this year, and Abby Hart is working with 8th grade students.
Our social workers & psychologists are available to support students daily. We will continue with our on-call process which has one social worker or psychologist on-call on any given day to support immediate student needs (see the on-call schedule in the visual above).
For your reference:
Natalia Panico works with teams 7A and 8A. She can be reached at panicon@wilmette39.org
Nicola Kiela works with teams 7B and 8B. She can be reached at kielan@wilmette39.org
Cathy Marlas works with teams 7C and 8C. She can be reached at marlasc@wilmette39.org
Elise Higgins works with our students throughout WJHS as-needed and is at WJHS Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday PM. She can be reached at higginse@wilmette39.org.
Next week, our social workers and psychologists will send out our first "Student Check-In Survey" of the year. This survey is just as it sounds - it provides an opportunity for students to provide feedback on how their year is going. If a student indicates they are struggling and would like support, a social worker or psychologist will reach out to talk with the student and provide support. If you would like to opt out your child from this survey, please email your social worker directly.
Monday is September 11th and young people in schools all over the country are taking a quiet moment to remember and honor the victims of the events that happened on September 11th, 2001. We hope that our WJHS students —along with children all over this country—will always treat everyone with dignity, respect, and kindness. So on Monday, while all of us at WJHS observe our moment of silence, I hope each of you will think about a way you can help other people.
We hope you have a restful weekend.
Sincerely,
Kate, Eric and Nicole

Tech Tidbit
Students at WJHS have attended a Mobile Learning Orientation with the Technology Integration Specialists. During this session, students are reminded of the D39 policies and procedures of using their iPads for school purposes only. Below are some important reminders that were covered.
iPad Oath - All students should have the iPad Oath on the lock screen of their iPads. This helps students to remember to be safe, responsible and respectful while using their school issued iPad. There is a Mobile Learning Orientation folder in each Homeroom Schoology Course that all students should complete. Inside this folder are directions and a template students can use to create their iPad Oath. Students are allowed to decorate the oath any way they would like as long as it is appropriate and the oath is readable.
Mobile Learning Handbook - Along with the D39 Handbook, there is a mobile learning handbook. Inside this handbook, there is information about safe, responsible and respectful iPad use. The handbook introduces the device, directions for care and some frequently asked questions are answered. This video is an overview of the Mobile Learning Program. There is a Contract at the end of the handbook that WJHS students signed during their Orientation. You can find all of the handbooks here.
District 39 uses a content filtering system to keep our students safe while using digital tools at school. Along with the content filtering, communication through school accounts is also monitored. These communication tools are monitored for appropriate use, such as language, where they will get flagged if anything inappropriate is happening. If they are sent messages with inappropriate language or content, they will also get flagged. We teach, model and guide students to use appropriate language and communicate respectfully when using these tools. We also remind them that they should be doing this in their daily life, whether digitally or face to face. Recently, you received information about Securly, a filtering system you can use at home with the iPads. Please refer to that email to follow directions on how to set it up and use it.
Thank you for your continued partnership in ensuring that our students are staying safe, respectful and responsible while using technology.

Contribute to the iGNITE! Fund (Enrichment)
Donate to the Teacher/Staff Appreciation Gift
WHAT IS THE iGNITE! FUND?
It’s what Enrichment is called in D39. The iGNITE! Fund raises money to pay for enrichment programs such as field trips, school assemblies and traveling speakers, along with contributing to enhancements to our schools which are directly related to our students, such as outdoor learning environments and athletic equipment. In D39, parents pay for enrichment opportunities not the district, so we ask families to make a donation on behalf of their student. ANY amount is appreciated. A complimentary car WJHS Magnet will be distributed in the Fall to all who have contributed to iGNITE! These will come home with your student. Log into Membership Toolkit and click on “WJHS STORE” to contribute to iGNITE.
