Mascoma District Update
❄️☃️❄️ December 2023 ❄️☃️❄️
Superintendent's Message
Mascoma Valley Regional School District Community:
Once again this year, the Mascoma Valley Regional School District will use Remote Learning days to help alleviate extended amounts of make-up days in late June. Remote Learning Snow Days provide an opportunity for students to engage with materials through our Learning Management System, Google.classroom, and to connect with their teachers over Google.meet or email.
Remote learning snow days will be considered only after 3 traditional snow days have been completed. This balance will allow for the magic of a snow day but will also mean fewer make up days in June. Your child’s teacher will be working with them to prepare for the transition to remote learning.
Preparing for a Remote Learning Day:
● Step 1-Students use the blended learning tools in their classrooms and practice logging into Google.classroom independently (some may still need help).
● Step 2- Students in grades 3-12 practice bringing their chromebooks home and logging into Google.classroom independently prior to the first Remote Learning Day.
Deciding to offer a Remote Learning Day:
The SAU #62 Leadership team collaboratively decides when the conditions are right to offer a Remote Learning Day, factoring in the following: the weather conditions and anticipated access to internet/electricity, readiness of the staff and students, timing of the storm (do we have enough information prior to the end of school the day before to call a Remote Learning Day), and duration of the storm (multi day events require different planning). The first weather related closure will be a traditional “snow day” with no school.
Remote Learning
Remote Learnings are assignments that can be completed at home in the event of a school cancellation. Assignments will be relevant and meaningful to the current curriculum being taught in classes. Each assignment should take an average of 25-35 minutes to complete for each course or content area. Students in grades 3-12 will access assignments via Google Classroom, which is a format all students are familiar with using, both at school and from home. Students in grades PreK-2 will have work sent home before a snow event and possible transition to remote learning. Teachers may provide assignments that instead ask students to practice, research, or reflect upon various aspects of the discipline.
In addition to accessing assignments via Google Classroom, teachers will be available via the internet to provide support. Connecting with students online could mean that students and teachers are having a Google Chat conversation, a threaded Google Classroom discussion, email communications, or even a threaded email dialog. There is a wide array of possibilities in this realm, and teachers will inform students of the best means of access and communication.
