Message from Mr. VanIwarden
Dear Coal Creek Community,
I hope this email finds you well and enjoying the beautiful fall season, although earlier this week it felt like winter. As the temperatures continue to drop, I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone of a few important things regarding our drop-off and pick-up procedures.
A friendly reminder about our Hug N Go system. When dropping off your children in the morning, please remember to pull all the way forward to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. We also ask that you be patient and do not pull past cars and attempt to pull into the Hug N Go midway through. It is also important to have your children ready to exit the car from the right side. For the safety of all students and staff, we kindly ask that parents remain in their cars and avoid making u-turns while in the drop-off zone. For those of you who park on the opposite side of the street, please make sure you are using the crosswalks. We appreciate your support and setting a good example for all of our children.
In addition, I wanted to inform you about our indoor process for days when temperatures are below 20 degrees. In such cases, we will be using a yellow flag to indicate that the indoor drop-off is in effect. This will help keep our students warm and protected from the chilly weather.
Furthermore, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the families who generously donated to our recent fundraiser. Your contributions have made a significant impact on our school community, and we are truly grateful for your support.
I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents who donated the meals for parent teacher conferences and snacks for our staff book study. The door decorations are absolutely amazing and have added a vibrant touch to each of our classroom and office entries. Additionally, I would like to acknowledge our dedicated walk/bike to school volunteers. Your commitment to promoting this event is greatly appreciated.
Lastly, I want to take a moment to appreciate the incredible community we have here at Coal Creek. Your involvement, support, and enthusiasm make our school a truly special place.
Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Wishing you all a wonderful November!

School Meals and Payment
Meals are still free, but the payment system is changing!
On November 13th Food Services will switch student meal accounts from MyPaymentsPlus to their new software system, called School Cafe. Balances will be automatically transferred to School Cafe on the 13th. Starting when the funds are transferred, if parents would like to add more money to their student’s account, they will have to create a School Cafe account and do it that way. Breakfast and lunch are still free every day, and parents don’t need to do anything for their child to continue to receive free meals. Money in the School Cafe account is for extra purchases, like second entrees, a la carte items, and side salads. Beginning on November 11th, MyPaymentsPlus will turn off and it will not be possible for parents to add funds to their student’s account.
With this transition we may temporarily see longer lunch lines. We anticipate that this will resolve quickly, but in the short term please remind teachers that arriving promptly at their scheduled lunch time helps us to operate most efficiently. Please direct parents to the resources if they have questions:
THANKS!!!

Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is a Knowledge Bowl Competition for students in grades 3-12. When students enroll in this group, they commit to reading the 12 books from the 2023-2024 Battle of the Books list by April 2024. The list includes books of various levels of difficulty, and reading with an adult or listening to reading is appropriate as well. Students then compete in teams at the school and district level to answer questions about the books. A goal for this club is to teach students how to work together in a group for a common goal, expose them to award-winning pieces of literature and encourage self-directed reading outside the classroom. –BVSD literacy website

Navigating Youth Sports and Activities
Some have called youth sports parenting the most competitive game in town. It all starts off so innocently and fun with our 4-5 year olds playing soccer, or as we refer to it “mush ball” (You fill in the sport or activity). 10 little kiddos chasing the ball around smiling, laughing, falling down. The parents and family members talking, watching, and calm. There is no score, no referee, just fun. The patience and perspective is right where it needs to be from most of the adults. That innocence seems to fade quickly, the patience and perspective give way to expectations and over involvement. What should be fun becomes stressful, anxiety filled and competitive, yes for the kids on the field but probably even more so from the parents on the sidelines or in the stands. We add a referee, a scoreboard and perspective and patience are no longer present for so many. 7 out of 10 young athletes quit playing sports by the time they are 13 yrs. old. I am sure that we can guess what the #1 reason is why children are quitting sports. I am a dad of 2 (13yr old boy, 11yr old girl). Both are into sports and both play very competitively. From a guy that has been teaching physical education and coaching sports for 20+ years, that has a masters degree in coaching and spent much of his studies diving into youth sport participation…I am here to tell you, being a youth sports parent is hard, VERY HARD! Navigating the landscape the right way within the chaos seems impossible at times. We all see it and if we reflect it might even be us. The adults are losing their minds and screaming at a 13 yr old referee for missing a call. Parents that direct and coach their player every second they are on the field or court. Nervous feelings and talk about the “big game” that our child is playing in at another weekend tournament. The FOMO (Fear of missing out), keeping up!
My hope is that I can share some of my experience and what I've learned over the years to support and help youth sports parents navigate through the chaos the best way for themselves and their family and most importantly their young athlete to make the experience a positive and enriching one. I will discuss topics such as youth sports burnout and quitting, specialization vs multi-sport participation, identity in sports, being a youth sport coach, Gameday, and more. I will share my 2 cents on certain topics but also share great resources that I have come across around these topics. I want to be a resource for our school and community around youth sports participation. My goal is to discuss relevant topics and share resources in hopes that families can reflect and make the best choices that they can for themselves.
When I share resources, they will be specific to the topic discussed, but if you are looking for some really good stuff to dive into now, here are a few:
