Flynn Elementary School News Sept. 27, 2023 (October issue of North Avenue News) Fifth Grade News Beat
Every fall the Flynn School Open House provides dinner and community camaraderie to the families of the New North End and beyond. This year this event also offered a small but brave crew of Flynn fifth graders their first opportunity to try out what it means to be a newspaper reporter. The six fledgling reporters collected their clipboards and “Press Passes,” briefly moaned that the photos were from 4th grade, and headed out into the impressive crowd to find out why it was that so many people had decided to spend their evening in this way.
Corinne bravely approached some parents, many of whom shared Yuris Mora’s feeling that “We love being a part of the Flynn community.” “It’s such a great opportunity to meet other parents and teachers,” Renee Lauber added. Colin, meanwhile, focused on polling his buddies and found out that more time on the playground and dinner interested a few of them, but that their main motivator was the chance to hang out with friends.
When Abby asked people what their favorite thing about Open House was, “friends” was also a frequent response. Some reference to food, however, was the most common theme. Simone found a guest who mentioned the homemade bruschetta as a highlight. The fact that Lottie’s notes included a drizzle of tomato juice, evidence of one of the main bruschetta ingredients grown right on the premises in the Flynn School Garden, suggests that even the reporters got to sample this delicious treat. “I’m here for the cookies,” Medina admitted. When Camilla checked in with third grade teacher and grill master Mr. Abbey, his reason for being at Open House was simple. He was there to “feed the teachers.” It is, after all, very hungry work spending your days with students!
