Johnathan Rand is coming to Salk!
Johnathan Rand, the author of the Michigan Chillers series is going to be visiting Salk Elementary for an assembly on December 5th. One of our students, Weston Gilbert, entered his name in a drawing at the Macomb Reads Festival to win a visit by the author. His name was drawn and our whole school wins. Thank you Weston!
If your student would like an autographed copy of one of Mr. Rand's books, you can purchase the book on order forms sent home on Friday. A copy of the form is also attached below. All orders are due December 4th. Books will arrive about one week after Mr. Rand's visit. Due to time constraints, Mr. Rand will not sign books during the assembly.
Snowball Express Shopping
Your child is invited to attend our upcoming Snowball Express Holiday Shop. It will be held on Monday, December 4th through Friday, December 8th.
The shop will enable your child to purchase their own special holiday gifts for family and friends. There will be an affordable selection of great items for everyone, such as popular jewelry, trendy gifts, and licensed sports and gift items. The shop is being hosted by our PTO.
Holiday Spirit Days!
Report Cards are Coming!
Report cards will be sent home with students at the end of the day on Wednesday, December 6th.
Requesting a Change in Learning Mode
At this time, families are eligible to request to change the learning mode for their student(s) for the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year. Families that are currently enrolled in in-person can switch to virtual, and families who are enrolled in virtual can switch to in-person. If you do not wish to switch your child’s learning mode, no action is necessary.
Requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Submitting the form linked below does not guarantee a request will be granted. Requests will be reviewed by building and district leadership and the parent/guardian will be notified. If approved, the change will be effective for the second semester (January 8 - June 7, 2024). Once a request has been approved, it will be for the duration of the second semester. Please carefully consider this semester-long commitment before submitting this application, as requests to change during the second semester will not be granted.
Additionally, please note that we have partnered with third party providers for the students’ daily instruction. We utilize Lincoln Learning for our K-6 students and Edgenuity for 7-12. A Fraser teacher will be assigned as your child’s mentor to help check in, keep him/her on track, and align the grading system with Fraser’s. The bulk of your child's instruction will be online and course content will be delivered by Lincoln Learning and Edgenuity. For younger students, a learning coach will be a critical piece in their success. The learning coach needs to support your child with daily instruction, content delivery, and technology. Please note, the District may change your child’s learning mode if appropriate academic progress is not met throughout the semester.
If you are interested in changing your child’s learning mode for the second semester, please fill out the application linked below. You will need to submit one request for each student.

READY OR NOT- THE COLD WEATHER IS HERE!
We're starting to see MANY students bundled up each day, which is great! Please be sure to send your child to school dressed for the weather each day. Students will start needing warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and/or boots daily throughout the winter.
Please take time to label each and every item- because our lost and found gets bombarded with lost winter accessories throughout the season
Please note that, per Board Policy, we will be having outdoor morning lineup and heading outdoors for our 20 minute recess(es) if the windchill is 10+ degrees.
Time outdoors is time well spent for kids, in all seasons.

Charlie the Therapy Dog
Charlie has made several visits to Salk with great success. Students are happy to see him and he really brightens the mood. Charlie will be coming back later this month.
Charlie's purpose is to ease student's anxieties and increase positive emotions. We do not want his presence to cause fear or anxiety. As a reminder, parents have the ability to opt out of having their student interact with Charlie. If you DO NOT want your student to be around Charlie, then please fill out the opt out form linked here.
For the safety of students with allergies and Charlie, he will not be in the lunch room. Charlie will also remain out of classrooms in which parents have a student who opt out. Charlie will be under my supervision and kept on a leash at all times.
Rules for Interacting with Charlie:
Use calm bodies and inside voices when around Charlie.
Always ask before petting Charlie.
Don't take food around Charlie/feed Charlie
