Dear BHS Families and Students:
As you know, similar to other high schools in our area, our bathrooms have become places where kids like to vape and/or congregate together as all other areas of the school are monitored by cameras and staff. Since our student body complained to me back in the fall, we have increased our monitoring of bathrooms and have stated clearly what the expectations are for students.
Most students do NOT want to navigate through a group of people in the bathroom! They just want to go and get out. We hear them! Please review what I recently shared with students and talk to your kids about it. We need their continued help to make our bathrooms safe and comfortable places to go and do their business. We also need your cooperation as parents to help us in reinforcing basic bathroom etiquette and behavior. If you see something, say something. We will address it and we will make this better.
We have listened to our students and we are working to ensure the following:
- Bathrooms are clean and properly stocked.
- Only one student is in a stall at a time.
- Students are not using the bathrooms as lounges, social areas to talk and check their phones, and/or break areas to vape or share vapes, eat, or do other nonsense.
- Food consumption, group meetings/social hours, vaping, and cell phone usage should NOT be happening in bathrooms, period!
Here is the rest of my message. I will continue to gather feedback from our student Culture Climate Leadership Team (CCLT) at BHS.
Be well!
Tom
Dear Bruins,
Since my last bathroom communication on January 3, 2023, we continue to address the concerns voiced by you, our student body, about general bathroom behaviors that are NOT helping to support our BHS MISSION – BHS Believes that everyone has the right to attend school in an environment that is safe, welcoming, caring, professional, and free from harassment.
I am very happy to say that things are getting better but we have a long way to go. Happy to talk more if you like!
We have increased monitoring of bathrooms by security, administrators, custodians, and faculty throughout the entire school day. From my conversation with student leaders recently, it appears that things are getting better, but of course, we will continue to address this ongoing issue.
If you are someone who goes about their day, going to class, having fun, doing your work, participating in activities/sports, and doing the right things drug free, thank you and I apologize that you need to read this.

CONSEQUENCES
- Students found violating these basic bathroom rules will continue to have their parents contacted and they will receive detentions after school.
- Repeat offenders will continue to lose free periods and receive Saturday detentions.
If you can’t get through your school day without taking a hit of nicotine or THC, you have a problem and you need to seek professional help. This is NOT healthy for you. See your counselor or Mr. Mitchell if you need help! We can help you, no questions asked. We really want to be helpful and not just punitive.
Students, as always, stop by the office or tell an adult if you see bathrooms where unsafe or inappropriate behaviors are taking place. You can also call the SafeSchools helpline at 1-800-418-6423 or text: 66746, TIPS.
