What else is out there?
In our own Backyard.... Maddie Petersen, Community Market Manager, Old National Bank
College: University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
Major: Strategic Communication Planning with an emphasis on Advertising
My first job in high school was as a florist for a small business that was ran out of the owner’s backyard. For such a modest work environment, we provided full service floral designs and services for high end weddings around the Milwaukee area.
Initially, I wanted to study fashion design and was accepted on the spot for my portfolio to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The price tag for that education was too high, even after the grant I was offered, so I enrolled at the University of MN, Twin Cities, in their Clothing Design Program.
After my first year, I realized it was not for me and made the switch to Advertising. I graduated in 2008, still in four years, even with my switch of major and while working, and found myself unable to land a job in advertising. I worked part time as a marketing representative for a start-up IT company for a few months until I went to withdraw cash from my local Wells Fargo in Uptown Minneapolis. I noticed the tellers and bankers truly enjoyed their jobs, despite many being recent grads like myself, and I decided to apply and give it a try.
My career in banking started from teller to lead teller, service manager, banker, assistant bank manager, bank manager and as of March of 2020, market manager. I am a very social person and the thing I have loved most about my job is the relationships I have been able to build with employees, coworkers, customers, and my communities. I have also been able to educate myself on finances and went from a college student with bad credit who needed to use cash advances to pay rent, to owning a home and a car while rebuilding to, and now maintaining, excellent credit.
As a market manager, I not only manage the Old National Bank in North St Paul, but I help support the other four locations in my market. I have nine people that directly report to me; four bank managers and five bankers. The most challenging part of this role tends to be juggling all the demands from five different locations. Thankfully, education helped train me for how to manage my time when being pulled in multiple directions. I also truly believe that everyone should have customer experience. In the bank, we have clients visit us at our desks, but to our back office support team, we are their customers, and it is important that everyone have a strong foundation in order to help everything run as smoothly as possible.
If I could say anything to my younger self, it would be to take chances, focus on work/life balance, and trust that things will work out, even if it looks different than you thought it would.
