Dear Bruin Families and Students:
This week was Red Ribbon Week! According to Red Ribbon Week - DEA.gov:
“Red Ribbon Week highlights the importance of living a drug-free life. It presents an opportunity for parents, educators, and communities to reinforce the drug-free messages they share with their children throughout the year. During Red Ribbon Week, youth and adults around the nation pledge to increase their knowledge by learning more about the destructive effects of drug abuse, including prescription drug misuse, and renew their commitment to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.”
This past Monday, we kicked off our week at BHS with a special HR assembly video program and presentation on the topic of VAPING, which is invading the lives of so many teenagers in our area and around the world. We talked about the purposeful advertisements targeting teenagers to vape, the health risks associated with vaping nicotine and THC and the reasons why vaping can be so addictive. We also offered up resources to students wanting to quit or wondering if they are addicted. We also asked students who are NOT vaping to keep an eye out for friends in trouble. Here is a link to what I shared with students.
As part of the presentation, we have also been working with the University of Rochester Medical Center and promoting their VAPE ESCAPE and educational programs to help teens quit vaping. Please click on this news clip highlighting one of our BOE Members and URMC professionals, Dr. Susan Gasparino, who is helping to lead the new programs.
Attached is a PDF document about the URMC VAPE ESCAPE Program.
For more information about getting assistance for your child, please contact Social Worker, Lance Mitchell at lance_mitchell@bcsd.org or 585-242-5000, ext. 4535.
Have a great weekend.
Be well,
T. Hall
HALLOWEEN COSTUME GUIDELINES
PLEASE REVIEW IF YOU CHOOSE TO DRESS UP!
First, students DO NOT need to dress up for Halloween. However, Halloween costumes may be worn at BHS on Tuesday, October 31st.
- Make sure your costume allows for safe and full participation in all learning activities during the day including physical education.
Please follow the same guidelines for appropriate dress for school when evaluating your student’s costume along with these more specific guidelines:
- Hats/head coverings may be worn, but faces must be visible and recognizable. MASKS and full face make up are NOT allowed.
- All “weapon-like” accessories for costumes must stay home and are NOT allowed on campus.
- Costumes must appropriately cover all under garments and should not be considered “revealing.”
- Costumes may not be offensive or promote the use of illegal substances.
- Students are NOT allowed to wear costumes or make up depicting blood or gore.
If students have a question about a costume, please have them contact one of the administrators by the end of the day Monday, October 30th.
BHS Presents Urinetown 10/27 and 10/28.
BHS Presents Urinetown
Friday, October 27 & Saturday, October 28 at 7pm Brighton HS Auditorium
Tickets $10 at the door (cash or check only) for general admission.
“Urinetown” is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, environmental collapse, privatization of natural resources, bureaucracy, municipal politics, and musical theatre itself. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Link to more information - District post

Current COVID Guidelines
The CDC recommends that people who have symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal infections, such as cough, fever, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea, should stay home. Testing is recommended for people with symptoms of COVID-19 as soon as possible after symptoms begin.
- If people test positive for COVID-19, they should stay home for at least 5 days and isolate.
- Isolation may end after Day 5 IF people are fever-free for 24-hours without fever-reducing medication AND their symptoms are improving.
- Day 0 being day of symptom onset or positive test.
- If symptoms are NOT improving, the CDC recommends that the person continue to isolate until symptoms improve and they are fever-free for 24-hours without fever-reducing medication.
- After the person has ended isolation and when symptoms have improved, the CDC recommends that people wear a well-fitting, high-quality mask through Day 10, OR until two rapid tests, taken 48-hours apart, are both negative.
