Happy October!

The air is getting chillier, the leaves are turning colors, and we're already into the second month of the school year. Fall has definitely arrived! Hopefully, by now your Young Scholar has settled into their routine and is finding new and exciting ways to engage their brain each day.

To help you support your Young Scholar at home, this month's newsletter will explore the various characteristics that helped identify your child as a Young Scholar in the first place.

As a reminder, at some time in their school career, your child has been recognized for their talented learner traits based on the various Young Scholar thinking lessons that I share with students as well as their daily class work.

You likely have seen these different ways of thinking show up at home, too, but sometimes it's hard to know how to describe them. Being able to talk about the qualities and strengths you recognize in your Young Scholar can help build their affirmation as well as increase access to experiences that grow their potential.

Which is why this month, we'll be taking a closer look at common learning traits of Young Scholars and sharing resources to help support your Young Scholar at home.

Let's take a closer look at some possible characteristics of a Young Scholar.

1. Scroll down and click on the image titled Young Scholar Traits and Resources.

2. Try these steps to help your Young Scholar engage in a discussion about their own learning traits:

• Read through and see what feels familiar to you. Focus on your child's strengths.
• Find something you recognize and talk about it with your Young Scholar.
• Brainstorm examples of how they see themselves using that trait in school or out.

The more your Young Scholar knows about themself, the better they are able to understand their strengths, set goals for growth, and realize their amazing potential.

*Note: Characteristics will look a little different in every child, and it is not expected that any child shows all of the traits.

My name is Colleen Redmond, and I am honored to work as Coordinator for SoWashCo Young Scholars.

I'm a mom, a wife, small business owner, avid biker (the pedal kind), book enthusiast, and beekeeper.

I've been lucky enough to teach in South Washington County Schools for over twenty-five years and have had the incredible opportunity to be a part of the lives of so many students and families over the years.

Now, as part of Young Scholars, I have the honor of working with the amazing staff, students, and families throughout SoWashCo to implement and grow the Young Scholars program.

I am so very excited to work with and support you and your Young Scholar. I can't wait to see where the journey takes us!
