Board of Education Adopts Budget For 2021-2022 School Year
The Woodland Park Board of Education recently held a public hearing for and adopted its 2021-2022 school district operating budget.
The total budget is $20,138,326. The local tax levy, the amount to be raised by taxation is $17,439,723, which is up 2% from the current year’s spending plan. The tax bill on a Borough average home, assessed at $346,136 will increase from $3,628 to $3,693 - or $65 per year.
The tax rate increases from $1.048 cents per hundred to $1.067 cents per hundred - or 1.9 tax points. This is calculated by dividing the assessed value of the home by 100 and then multiplying by $1.067 for local school tax.
The budget, with grant funds from the state, will enable the school district to open its second full-day pre-K facility this fall. School 1 had reopened in September 2020 as a District pre-K facility with grant funds as well.
“With all of these tight budgets, we were able to reopen School 1 and we’re going to be opening another building, and we’re going to be increasing enrollment by another 120 children,” Superintendent, Dr. Michele Pillari, said. “We as a board team and an administrative team really put together a fine budget, in my opinion, while increasing services for children in our town.”
Business Administrator, Mr. Paul Murphy, noted that the spending plan maintains all existing programs. It utilizes grant funding to minimize the impact of local tax dollars on the total budget. The grant funds are used for sustainable purchases to facilitate the opening of schools and healthy environments.
The budget also increases staff to accommodate needs in early childhood and primary grades. It adds two new teachers at Charles Olbon School – special education and intervention – and two additional Special Resource Officers, so that there is one stationed at every building.
The spending plan also includes the purchase of upgrading and maintaining technology in order to continue the 1:1 technology initiative district-wide.
In addition to opening a second early childhood center, other facility improvements for 2021-2022 include continuing to upgrade HVAC and indoor air quality and utilizing grant funding to upgrade and maintain healthy school environments.
Factors that impact the budget include under-funded state aid, special education costs, health benefit costs and dependence on expensive technology. This includes wireless infrastructure, digital textbooks, computers, printers, servers, and network switches.

Virtual Room Created Just For Staff
Charles Olbon School Guidance Counselor, Ms. Indri, met with teachers and staff for Social-Emotional Learning check-ins during the months of February and March. Everyone was able to share individual thoughts and feelings about the past year. As the meetings continued, a pattern became clear - personal connections that the colleagues created in the staff room were sorely missed. This includes the informal jokes, lunch conversations, personal life updates, birthday celebrations and so much more. As a result, Ms. Indri created a virutal staff room! She took the ideas that were suggested in the meetings and created a Virtual CO Staff Room! This virtual room houses clickable objects that connect to various links for staff to enjoy. There is a Happy Birthday doc, a virtual Bitmoji staff photo slide, TV/book recommendation Jamboards, a Good News Jamboard, Staff Shoutout Jamboard, calming videos, and much, much more! Please join us in the virtual chat room by checking it out here.

All seventh grade band students are invited to join the PV Marching Band next year as eighth graders. Music teacher, Mr. Schaefer, has had several eighth grade students participate in previous years and he said it's always a great experience for them. Marching band is a fantastic way to reinforce the concepts they've been learning in band class and a great way to make new friends.
