James City County Rotary Club presented Hampton Campus Principal Dewey Ray with a check for their continued support of the Career and Technical Education Scholarship Fund. This check will help fund scholarships for local students that attend New Horizons Regional Education Centers Career and Technical Education High School.

The welding students took on the challenge of fixing a Mission BBQ truck that needed some welding repairs. Not only was it a great real life experience for the students, but it also came with some tasty benefits!

On April 9th, David Degaraff of Cisco Networking and Christian Franklin of Computer Programming placed 1st in their categories. They will head to the national competition in Atlanta later this summer.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) HUNCH Culinary Arts team traveled to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. They competed with nine other top schools from across the nation for recognition, scholarships, and the prestige of having their dish on the official menu for astronauts before traveling to space. Even the founder of the HUNCH Program asked for their recipes!

Most people don’t realize how much goes into making sure our highways and byways are safe to traverse, but the Hampton Roads Public Works Academy (HRPWA) Cadets got a firsthand look at some of the tools that are used to ensure everyone follows the “rules of the road".

On March 30, 2022, The College of William & Mary (W&M) visited the Governor's School of Science and Technology (GSST) campus to meet with students to discuss atmospheric chemistry's link to regional aerosol production. This was a preparatory meeting for GSST students to construct and measure atmospheric data to be published in peer-reviewed journals sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

There were a few juniors registered for the Tidewater Science Fair this year, but everyone who did enter is a winner!

On Friday, March 18, The Governor's School for Science and Technology (GSST) participated in a state high school Programming contest at VCU with two teams. Both teams showed an incredible performance!

There were nine solvable problems in the contest (the tenth was impossible to solve), and only three teams solved them all: Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHS) 1, TJHS 2, and GSST. One of GSST's teams solved all nine problems just slightly after TJHS teams and earned third place. Our next team solved eight and earned fourth place. Here is the list of GSST's teams:

The Governor's School of Science and Technology (GSST) sent two teams to the M3 Challenge on Sunday, February 27, 2022. Students made the commitment for the entire day's competition, from 7:00 am till 9:00 pm. MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3 Challenge) is a contest for high school juniors and seniors in the U.S. and sixth form students in England and Wales. Students were facing previously unknown problem scenarios. Each team worked independently and collaboratively, using the math modeling process to represent, analyze, make predictions and otherwise provide insight into that real-world phenomena and the posed problem’s questions. They created a mathematical representation of a real-world scenario to make a prediction and provided insight. After 14 hours of hard and exciting work, they submitted a 22 pages solution, and now are waiting for the judges' results! Students experienced what it’s like to work as a team to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints, akin to those faced by professional mathematicians working in industry.

The Center for Autism and Newport Academy are excited to have our Recreation Therapy outings resume after a long interim due to the pandemic. Our middle school students went bowling and had lunch at McDonalds. Students had a great time and it was a great way to practice lots of skills while having a ton of fun!

The Center for Autism (CFA) speech team and Adapted Physical Education teacher created several gross motor activities for students to include a bean bag toss, ring toss, and obstacle course. The speech team created a social story and visual support to increase student participation and engagement. Parents donated hundreds of treat - filled eggs to make this great activity a success.

Learning about butterflies in the classroom is a fun experience for our students. At Center for Autism Kiln Creek, room 303, students engaged in a fun way to put active learning into action. They learned all about the butterfly life cycle and had a front-row seat to observe the growth process. Growing and then releasing the butterflies provided students with an outstanding, hands-on opportunity.

Newport Academy Men’s mentoring group, Iron Sharpens Iron, have been volunteering at the Thrive food bank. Staff and students have been helping to unload donations, organize the pantry, and pack donations for customers. Students have been learning new skills while also helping the community!

Newport Academy T-Shirt Fundraiser was a success. Money raised from the fundraiser went towards student activities. Staff had a good time wearing their shirts and taking group pictures. We appreciate everyone who purchased shirts for the fundraiser.

The Center for Autism (CFA) York Middle School team took a break from our typical all-staff training and engaged in a CFA Staff Escape Room. Staff worked together to solve behavior and related services riddles and puzzles to find the hidden key. Each team had 60 minutes to find clues, solve puzzles, and communicate with their team to escape the room in time. This classic activity was a blast and inspired critical thinking, and enhanced team bonding

The Center for Apprenticeship & Adult Training (CFAAT) Summer Construction & Facilities Maintenance 2022 Cohort began work on learning how to build a “tiny house” from the foundation up! One of the first lessons taught by instructor Daniel Broadhurst was how to use a tape measure and understanding sixteenths and tenths in measurements. Great job students!

The Center for Apprenticeship & Adult Training (CFAAT) collaborated with Career and Technical Education (CTE) High School Butler Farm and accompanied High School Principal and New Horizons Regional Education Center's new Marine Technology Instructor, Mr. Steve Forney, up to Northern Neck Technical Center to tour their Marine Technology space and visit their Marine Trades instructor and classroom.

The Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training (CFAAT) would like to welcome the very first Spring Apprentice Related Instructional cohort for the Level One Electrician Apprenticeship for the State of Virginia being instructed by CFAAT's very own Amy England! This class captured any new hire apprentices that onboarded after the fall semester related instruction traditional classes began in September. We love our Apprentices!

Eleven Out of-School Youth and four In-School Youth participated in a week-long work experience preparation week, leadership development, and financial literacy. After which they were placed at various worksites on the Peninsula.

The Youth Workforce Center and students are grateful to Ciwaka Johnson from the Human Resources Department at New Horizons Regional Education Centers. Johnson provided much needed education and advice to students regarding required new hire paperwork, benefits packages, and other HR issues that new hires encounter. The students were happy to have their numerous questions answered by such a trusted expert

A warm thank you to the dynamic duo, Yugonda Sample-Jones and Johnny Miller who started the month off by helping our students to embrace a growth mindset in pursuit of their dreams.

As The Newport News Neighborhood Watch Coalition, President, The Choice Neighborhood Initiative - Citizens Advisory Committee, 1st Vice Chair and a member of the Newport News Board of Zoning Appeals, Sample-Jones, is the founder of “Royals”, a program promoting positive self-image and community service for young women. Her passion for connecting services and resources to the people who need them the most, has affectionately earned her the “Big Momma” title. Sample-Jones also created “EmPower All”, an organization whose mission is to Encourage, Expose, and Engage People living marginalized communities to cultivate socioeconomic change.

Miller’s entrepreneurial spirit and tenacity has paved the way for him to start On the Way Home Repairs, MTM Customer Solutions, and going into partnership to create Miller & Bryant Trucking. Fueled by his determination to break generational curses Miller aided his daughter in establishing Jreams, a home beauty supply delivery company. He is passionate about showing future generations how to use their passion to create business, supporting countless young entrepreneurs in pathways out of poverty.

New Horizons Family Counseling Center would like to bring your attention a fantastic opportunity for parents, guardians, and caregivers in the Hampton Roads area. The New Horizons Family Counseling Center will be offering a FREE group counseling program on Thursday evenings. It began Thursday (4/14), from 6-7 PM that will address talking about race and ethnicity at home. Check out the flyer if you would like to meet new people and learn new strategies and tools for communicating with children about race, ethnicity, and culture from experienced group facilitators and other parents/guardians/teachers.

With busy work, school, and sports schedules, spending quality time as a family can be challenging! Family dinners can be a great way to catch up, learn about one another, and provide emotional support to family members.
