Family Newsletter-September 11, 2020
It's been quite a week starting with windstorms and ending with smoke and wildfires across Oregon. My thoughts are with you and your friends and family impacted by these circumstances. Teachers are ready to get school started on Monday. This past week they spent time reaching out and connecting with all of you. Being able to connect with students has been incredibly rewarding and they are anxious to begin! As we get started, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child or accessing their learning, please reach out to your child's teacher. Below you will find a lot of information pertinent to the start of the school year. We are looking forward to welcoming back our students and welcoming all of our new students as well!
Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Gina McLain
Important Dates to Remember
- September 14: Comprehensive Distance Learning begins!
- Mid October: District reviews health metrics and considers a timeline for moving to Hybrid Learning and will notify students and families.
- November 5: End of 9 week quarter
Attendance
- Participating in a live video class
- Communicating with the teacher via chat, text message, communication app, or email
- Posting completed coursework to a learning management system (i.e. Google Classroom) or web-based platform (i.e. McGraw Hills Wonders Language Arts) or via email
- Turning in completed coursework on a given day
- A phone call between the teacher or educational assistants/paraprofessionals and the student, or, for younger students, with the parent or guardian of the student.
Attendance will be recorded for all Lenox students at 2:00pm daily. If a student has not participated in any of the above opportunities by 2:00, they will be marked absent for the day. Attendance calls will go out to families at 5:00pm to notify you if your child has not participated in the day's learning. If a student engages in learning after 2:00pm and before midnight, the teacher will go back in to the attendance system the next morning and will mark the student as present for that previous school day.
If you know your student is going to be absent, please still call our attendance line to report the absence. Our attendance line is 503.844.1363. Please also continue to closely communicate with your child's teacher regarding their attendance and any issues that arise for your student.
Chromebooks & Hotspots
If your child is unable to attend live sessions or access any learning due to lack of technology access, your child's teacher will be reaching out to you to connect and support you. If you have a tech device that doesn't have a camera, but your child can still join live sessions by audio, that is a good back up option. All lessons will be recorded, so your student will have access to be able to watch the sessions later. Again, we sincerely apologize for the delay.
Free Meals for All Students
HSD is providing free meals to all students, Mondays through Fridays when school is in session, through at least December 2020. Meals are being delivered via bus routes (check www.hsd.k12.or.us/mybus for stop locations and times), and are also available in a drive-through/walk-up model between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.* at six schools: Century High School, R.A. Brown Middle School, Evergreen Middle School, Poynter Middle School, South Meadows Middle School, and Lincoln Street Elementary School. (*This distribution time starts on Monday, Sept. 14, and will remain the same through at least Friday, Nov. 6, 2020.) Any student or parent can go to any bus stop or hub location to get food.
When you go to www.hsd.k12.or.us/mybus if you scroll down you will see Click here to continue and will be prompted to put in the User Name= student's ID number, and Password= student's birthdate (in mmddyyyy format). Once you are logged in, your student's name will be listed. You click on their name and it takes you to the meal route information. What you are looking for is the time (listed on the far right) for when the bus will be at your stop with meals. The "To" will tell you where the stop is. For more information, please visit www.hsd.k12.or.us/nutrition.
What Do I Need To Know?
- All synchronous (live) lessons/ instruction will be recorded. This is done so that if a student misses a live session they still have access to their education or if a student would benefit from viewing the instruction again. The only exception to this is morning meetings from 8:30-9:00. Morning meetings will not be recorded.
- Assessments--this fall your child's teacher will be conducting some assessments to know where your child is at in order to inform their instruction to best meet your child's needs and the needs of the whole class. Some of these assessments may be during their applied learning/asynchronous times. It is imperative that you do not help your child with these assessments. If you help them, we do not get a true picture of what your child does not know and this may impact the instruction they receive. However, you can support them. Supporting looks like noticing fatigue or frustration and giving them encouragement, reminding them to use strategies and tools they learned in the past, and offering your child breaks. It does not look like helping them answer a question, giving them the answer, telling them how to solve a math problem, etc. Thank you for following these guidelines to ensure your child's success on their educational pathway.
Family Tech & Digital Tools Support
- Student Tech Support-- Students should call or text 503-886-8956 for technical assistance, selecting English or Spanish when prompted. The old student tech support number will prompt them to call the new one. Support is also available through techhelp@hsd.k12.or.us.
