Return to Learning in 2020-21 - Message from Superintendent Grumley
June 12, 2020
Hello Garfield Re-2 Family:
I hope that you and your family are well and enjoying the summer sunshine.
We know that families, communities, and staff want to know what the school year will look like for the 2020-21 school year. We do too. Our District administration must adhere to the guidance from the State of Colorado, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Garfield County Public Health, and Colorado High School Athletics and Activities Association. As their guidance changes - and it does quickly - we will be able to do more planning, preparing, and communicating about what the future looks like.
What we know is that we will be ready to teach students however that may look. Our first priority is to keep our students and staff safe and provide the best education possible within the guidelines that are provided. Our greatest hope is that when the school year begins for 2020-21, we will experience in-person teaching and learning. However, we know that information changes rapidly and we must be prepared for three different models for the 2020-21 school year including 100% in-person, 100% virtual, or a combination of the two. We know that depending upon the current public health situation we may be moving between any of the three models at any given time.
Four different task forces consisting of Garfield Re-2 staff will officially begin work on instructional modeling, health and safety, early childhood and parent engagement on June 15. The parent engagement committee has already begun their work with a series of focus groups - online and in person. Hopefully, you have been able to participate in one of these groups. If not, the link to the questions is here. We would value the feedback from you and your family.
As these task forces complete their work, we will be sharing their progress with you - likely around June 30. We have provided some additional information below that we continue to refine as we receive more information.

Contracts and reasonable assurance
CERTIFIED CONTRACTS
The School Board has given the direction to use $3 million in fund balance toward the 2020-21 projected budget shortfalls, They have also directed the 2020-21 budget to reflect a delay in the steps and lanes increases until January 2021 so they can see if our student enrollment numbers stay the same and if there are any mid-year reductions in state funding. This includes any salary increase for all staff that may be due to years of experience or professional development.
Human Resources is now able to begin issuing employment contracts for all certified staff. We anticipate issuing all employment contracts by June 26, 2020. You will get an email notification when your contract is ready for signature through Talent Ed.
REASONABLE ASSURANCE
While we would like to be able to give reasonable assurance to all of our classified staff, we are unable to do so until we have a clearer picture of our staffing model for the 2020-21 school year.
If you have questions regarding salary and benefits please contact hr@garfieldre2.net.
