Message from the Principal
Happy Friday to you all! We have had an amazing start to the school year. Kids, teachers and staff are happy to be back to the business of teaching and learning. It has been so fun to reconnect with our school community in ways we haven't been able to for some time and we are thrilled to have so many of our programs back, or coming back soon.
We kicked off our Let's Be Community! event this week. In classrooms, students and teachers have been learning about each other and discussing important aspects of identity and culture. Activities for this event have been designed to celebrate our diversity, individual identities, our strengths and assets and to learn about others while building our school-wide community. Our goal is to learn more about ourselves and about each other, so that we can serve the entire community with more efficacy and more empathy. Today, as a part of our school-wide community building, many classes met their big/little buddies. Students were buzzing with excitement to begin to get to know their buddies for the year. (Check out our social media sites for pictures!) Coming soon will be our Parade of Portraits and We All Fit Together art projects. As a culmination to this school-wide event, we are planning a Cultural Fair. Originally, we had tentatively scheduled this event to be the evening of October 13, however, we have decided to postpone the event until later in the year in order to get input from you, our community. Stay tuned for ways you can provide input to make this event meaningful, extraordinary and most importantly, a reflection of our community.
There's a lot of new information contained in this edition of the Dragon News. Including a call for PTO committee members. Settle in, get comfortable and read on, Findley.
Have a fantastic weekend!
With Gratitude~
Sherry Marsh, Ed.D.

School Meals
The federal waiver and funding that allowed BSD to provide free meals for all students ended on June 30. The District can no longer offer free meals for all. Families can apply online for free or reduced-cost meals for this school year. Visit the Meal Benefits webpage to get started. The free and reduced-cost meal program offers many benefits beyond nutrition for participating families, including fee waivers, activity scholarships and school supplies. We encourage all families to take advantage of this option, if eligible.
Beginning in September, students not participating in the free and reduced-cost program will need to pay for meals again. Students who were approved for free and reduced-cost meals in 2021-22 will automatically be approved for free meals for the first 30 days of this school year. However, a new application will need to be submitted for the benefit to continue.
Community Eligibility Program (CEP) schools will continue to offer free breakfast and lunch for all students next school year. CEP-approved schools include Aloha-Huber Park, Barnes, Beaver Acres, Chehalem, Fir Grove, Greenway, Hazeldale, Kinnaman, McKay, McKinley, Vose and William Walker elementary schools and Community School at Merlo Station. Students enrolled at CEP schools do not need to apply for meal benefits. If you have additional students in your home who attend other, non-CEP schools in the BSD, you must fill out a meal benefits application and be approved to receive free meals.
