ALTA VISTA NEWS AND INFORMATION
FEBRUARY - BLACK HISTORY MONTH
As Alta Vista celebrates Black History Month during February, we will be including lessons about leaders, history-makers, and other individuals into our classroom Social-Emotional Learning. In addition to classroom activities, our weekly Cougar PAWS & Pride assemblies will include short videos on the lives of people who have influenced our history. This week, we introduced Black History Month with an excellent PBS video explaining how the celebration was started. We also learned about Martin Luther King Jr. with a video about his life and contributions. In case you would like a sneak peek into today's assembly presentation, you can click on the videos below. (Please note that I edit the clips when shared with students to eliminate the typical message to "subscribe or like" the video.)
HOME AND SCHOOL CLUB NEWS
Alta Vista Cares: Winter Donation Drive Continues Through Friday
From January 29 – February 9, 2024, Alta Vista families will be collecting items to help local unhoused and food-insecure high school students. Teachers in nearby communities report that some students come to school hungry and exhausted from sleeping in their cars or working night shifts, and their resource centers are lacking basic items to help the students. Resource centers are in particular need of the following items that we hope Alta Vista families can provide during our winter drive:
- Granola bars, Slim Jims and snacks
- Basketballs, soccer balls and free weights
- School supplies
- Diapers (infant to 3T) and wipes for teen parent childcare center
- Used sewing machines and art supplies for art projects
Please start gathering your supplies so we can make a difference this winter! Please contact Claire Kalia with any questions. clairekalia@gmail.com
