Student Artist’s Work on Display
Last month, Patton 8th grader Damien Ceja Ponce’s artwork, “Patton Pride,” was installed on the wall across from the Peace Garden at the school. Damien worked on the piece over two school years, sticking with the project even when a new art teacher came to Patton.

Sextortion: What You Need to Know
Sextortion, or coercing children into sending explicit images online, is a growing crime, according to the FBI. The Portland division is offering a virtual discussion for families, caregivers, teens and young adults to learn about the risks, warning signs and how to stay safe online and report if you or someone you know is a victim.
The hour-long meeting is February, 21 beginning at 4:30 p.m. Email Outreach.PD@fbi.gov by February 20 to receive a meeting link. Find out more about sextortion here.
Mac High Robotics Headed to State Championships
Kudos to the two robotics teams whose four months of work culminated in two berths at the FIRST Tech Challenge state championships!

Mac High Thespians Qualify Three for State
Congratulations to 22 Grizzly thespians who competed at the Oregon Thespians NW Regional Acting Competition last weekend. Many of the students received high marks and freshman Bella Eberle was a regional finalist (Solo Musical Theatre Novice). Freshman Jayden Smith (Solo Musical Theatre Experienced), junior Mason Fuller (Solo Musical Theatre Experienced), and junior Yalia Becerril and Mason Fuller (Duet Musical Theatre Experienced) all qualified for the Oregon Thespians state festival in April!
Safety Summit to Offer Session on Social Media Use
If you ever wonder (or worry) about what your children are doing on social media, join us on Wednesday, March 6 for the 2024 Safety Summit. We will have a session on how to talk about and monitor your student's social media use and another with surprising information about how social media is used in sex trafficking. Find out more about these, and other, sessions included in the evening.
Oregon Battle of the Books
The Battle of the Books program is going strong across the district. From elementary (pictured, members of Wascher’s Glowbots and Champion Chariots teams before their battle yesterday) to middle school to high school, students are reading a booklist and competing as teams to test their knowledge of the books.
Thank you to the McMinnville Education Foundation for supporting this fun literacy program in our schools!
Ukuleles in the Library
Mac High librarian Lori McGreal brought music into her biweekly teaching for the Life Skills class by inviting teacher Mike Fair to play his ukulele as she read “Ukulele Hayley” to the students.
Mr. Fair brought some extra ukuleles and students strummed along before moving into the reading part of the lesson with their peer mentors. Check out the reel on the MSD Instagram feed!
Scouting for Food
Scouts for all local packs have been out in the community placing door hangers to tout their upcoming food drive. Scouts will pick up bags of nonperishable food left on porches on Saturday, March 2 and deliver them to either YCAP or the MSD Family Resource Center (FRC).

Reminder: schools may not accept special occasion deliveries to students from third parties (including businesses) for birthdays, Valentines Day or other events.

No School Day Camp at Evergreen
Evergreen Museums is offering a Bessie Coleman Barnstormer Camp on Friday, Feb. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The camp includes a day at the museum's Flight Training Center, a live theatrical performance and other activities. The event honors Bessie Coleman, the first Black woman and first Native American descendent to earn a pilot’s license. Coleman’s inspiring life story is related through a performance by her great-niece Gigi Coleman. Details and tickets here.
