Bobcat Tales
January 12, 2024
This week at SLVE
It has been fun to welcome our SLVE Bobcats back to school this week. Everyone seemed very happy and enthusiastic about getting back to school and seeing their friends and teachers. It has been a pretty wet and rainy week, but students have made the best of rainy day recesses, indoor PE classes and indoor lunches.
Our PBIS theme of the month for January is kindness. The Great Kindness Challenge is the week of January 22nd-26th. SLVE students will be participating in many acts of kindness activities throughout the month!
We have another short 4 day week ahead of us. Please remember that there will be no school on Monday, January 15th in remembrance of the Martin Luther King Holiday. School will resume on Tuesday, January 16th.
Transportation School Messenger
The Transportation Department will be testing our ability to communicate changes to bus routes via text message. Over the next weeks, we will be encouraging families to confirm we have accurate phone numbers and encourage them to participate.
Recipients may “Opt-In” to receive text messages by texting “Y” to 67587 from each wireless device they wish to receive texts on. SLVUSD does not charge recipients for the text messages however certain wireless providers may charge for individual text messages, depending on the plan associated with the wireless device.
Recipients may “Opt-out” by not replying to the text or by texting “STOP” to 67587 at any time.
In order to receive text messages from SLV Transportation, cell phone numbers must be in PowerSchool.
SLVE Steam Expo
If your student wants to do a project for the 2024 STEAM Expo, it's not too late! Register online here.
The STEAM Expo will be on February 12-13, 2024. More information is available on the SLVE Website.
We are looking for volunteers to interview students about their work. If you can spare an hour or more on Monday morning, no expertise is needed! Here is a link to sign up.
Students who are registered can pick up a trifold board in the office or in room 29.
Feel free to email any questions to Hilde Largay at hlargay@slvusd.org.

Umbrellas at school
Umbrellas have become a bit of an issue on rainy days and are becoming a safety issue. It is not necessary for students to bring umbrellas to school, but if your student does bring an umbrella to school, we are asking that they leave it with their backpack during the school day. If it is raining, students stay indoors for recesses. If students are able to go outside for recesses then it is not raining and umbrellas are not necessary. Thank you.
SLVE Parking Reminders
It is very important that when parking at SLVE, you are only parking in designated parking spots. Many people have been parking in the fire lane and other non designated parking spots. The SC County Sheriff's office has been ticketing any cars that are not parked in designated spots. Cars parked in non designated spots may be towed. Buses and cars need to be able to pass through the parking lot safely and with plenty of room to keep everyone safe. PLEASE follow these parking rules so that everyone stays safe and no one gets a ticket or gets towed. It is very important that handicapped parking spots are reserved for drivers who have a DMV issued handicapped placard and who benefit from using them. We thank you for your thoughtful cooperation concerning access to these parking spots.
Absences Matters~Every Day Counts......
We know people get sick, people get injured, and there can be family or life responsibilities and other issues that are reasonable and excused. But if your student can attend, they need to be in school. If your student is out for three or more consecutive days, we may request a doctor’s note to continue excusing the absences. Students who miss 3-5 days will receive a Chronic Absence letter. We will then meet with those families to attempt to support the student attending school. On the second Chronic Absence Letter, families may be required to meet at the District Office to put a plan in place for the student’s attendance. On the third Chronic Absence Letter, families may be required to meet with the County Office Student Attendance Review Board for truancy. Our goal is that nobody ever gets that far along with truancy. We are here to help and support, but it does start at home with the expectation that your student will attend school regularly.
Please remember that students who are absent 3 days or more should complete an independent study contract. Lisa Ghelardi, at lblairghelardi@slvusd.org our SLVE Registrar, will work with families to get the paperwork and the missed classwork assignments needed to complete the contract.
