Nationwide PSAT Day!

On October 13th, all of our 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students will take the PSAT on campus during the school day.

For our 11th graders, THIS IS THE TEST THAT PUTS YOU IN THE RUNNING FOR NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLAR DESIGNATION!

National Merit semifinalists, finalists, and scholars are eligible for major scholarship monies, including full-rides at many universities!

For our 9th and 10th graders, this is your chance to practice the PSAT and receive scores that we will use to develop a personalized learning plan for you to be ready for your junior year!

We have spent the last two weeks signing up all of our 9,10,11 grade students on www.satpractice.org and linking their previous scores to develop their personalized study plan.

Please encourage your student to take advantage of the short lessons and practice sets on this site. It's the best prep your student can do to raise his/her scores.

When your student completes 3 hours of practice and one timed practice test, Mr. Kelly will hand-deliver this year's newly designed Academy t-shirts for FREE!

6 hours and one practice test has been shown to raise scores by an average of 39 points!

Teachers are going to offer extra-credit for students who complete 6 hours of prep and do two practice tests before October 13th. This is HUGE as extra-credit is not normally available.

Please encourage your student (maybe there are incentives at home as well?) to spend some time preparing for October 13!!!

• Mr. Melsom has been teaching for 31 yrs (2 yrs. Seoul International School, 22 yrs. Singapore American School.)
• He teaches AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles.
• He has been married for 40 yrs, has 2 kids (A&M grads), and 6 grandkids.
• He has earned multiple degrees: BS: Computer Science minor math, MED: leadership, PhD: Education.
• He has attended Victoria College, University of Houston, Capella University.
• His hometown is Quarryville, Pa.
• Mr. Melsom is a veteran of the US Navy, and Texas Army National Guard.

September 2 - Mark Frasier, PhD - Co-Chief Scientific Officer at The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Register in advance here.

Mark Frasier joined the Foundation in 2006. As Chief Scientific Officer, Mark manages a team of research professionals who stay closely linked to the Parkinson's research community in order to develop an aggressive and innovative agenda for accelerating research and drug development for Parkinson's disease.

On September 15th, from 6 - 7 pm in the CHS Auditorium, I will host a Parent Meeting for all Academy Parents.

I have talked to many parents and students about confusion regarding Academy-specific requirements (i.e., internships, community service, explorations, etc...).

At this meeting, I hope to review and clarify these expectations, answer your questions, and get to know the families that make up The Academy.

For a variety of reasons, many families have chosen not to apply for Free/Reduced lunches even though they would qualify. While ALL students are able to eat for free this year, only students who apply and meet the eligibility criteria can get the following benefits!

• AP Tests- Reduced registration fee for AP tests.
• SAT/ACT tests - Free registration
• Most Sports- Free or discounted pay to participate sport fees.
• Internet Access- Eligible for discounted internet access services.
• P-EBT- Eligibility for any future P-EBT benefits for the 21-22 school year.
• College Application Fees- Discounted rate on fees associated with applying for college.

An application this year will establish free or reduced price meal eligibility for the 22-23 school year.

We understand and share your concerns about the increase of COVID-19 cases in our community. We continue to recommend and strongly encourage that all employees, students, and families take all precautions necessary to protect one another. Regular hand washing, staying home when sick, and wearing a mask or face covering as appropriate are practices that helped keep our district open last year. Our building and classrooms are also e-misted daily along with being cleaned in accordance with our standard practices.
