Preparing Your Child with Special Needs to Enjoy the Holidays
- Get Ready: Discussing what will happen at different events or activities. Social Stories, movies and books can help children prepare. Also discuss coping skills such as wearing comfortable clothing, having head phones, or having a favorite toy or activity available.
- Prepare for Gatherings: Gather pictures of less familiar relatives prior to the event and play memory games matching names and faces. Share that offering a wave, a hand shake or blowing a kiss are acceptable if hugs are uncomfortable.
- Practice Relaxation Techniques: Teach children breathing techniques (Such as pretending to blow out a candle) stretching, or pack a self-care relaxation bag.
- Write Things Down: Help children make a list of what they want to do for the holiday and add it to the calendar. Discuss the plans regularly and count down the days to the events.
- Be Flexible: Don't overbook. Do some relaxing activities such as making pop corn and watching a movie in your pajamas. It is amazing what an hour or so of relaxation can do for all of your bodies, minds, and spirits.

Building Strong Brains: ACEs - Knoxville
Find out more information about ACES!
This presentation will explore how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) harm the developing brains and bodies of children compromising the foundation for lifelong health. The ACE research has resulted in child abuse and neglect being acknowledged as a major public health problem and a leading cause of early death. From academic failure to alcoholism, from crime to cancer, presence of ACEs compromise the safety, tax dollars and quality of life for all Tennesseans. This presentation will also identify community-based strategies to prevent and mitigate ACEs and build resilience. Understanding the ACE research deepens professional knowledge across sectors and creates a common language for collectively addressing community challenges.

You’ve probably heard it before: Self Care, self care, self care! To be able to water another person’s garden, you need to water yours first. Art and creative activities have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, and help with processing difficult situations. No art experience is necessary to reap the benefits of a creative practice.
