A Note From the Principal
Parent teacher conferences and our Literati Book Fair will be next week, the week of October 23-26. There is no school on Friday October 27th. We are excited to see everyone there!
I will be stopping in to several conferences to check in and say hello. Our teachers work very hard daily to help each student, and I am so proud of all of the work that I see accomplished in classrooms each day. We have an amazing staff at Mable Woolsey!
Next week is also Red Ribbon week! Please check out our spirit days below. There is also a link for Red Ribbon week below with more information and activities.
Each week I have been adding reading and math articles and resources below that connect with what we are working on at school. Any of these articles or ideas will help you to understand how to talk to your child about books they are reading as well as ideas for practicing math at home as needed.
Thank you,
Mrs. Keever
Halloween Reminders
Students can bring costumes to school and change into costumes here at school before the parade at 2:00. Students should not wear costumes to school for the whole day. *This is different for pre-k so please contact your child's pre-k teacher for this information!*. If you do not have a costume, please reach out to your child's teacher. We do have extra costumes here at school.
Costumes must be school appropriate. Toy weapons are not allowed, and excessive blood and gore is not appropriate at the elementary level. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's costume please check with your child's classroom teacher.
We will live stream the parade virtually on our Facebook Page again this year. We will have the parade in the gym with just the teachers and students. Parents/Guardians can watch the live stream or the recording if you need to view at a later time. Our page again is https://www.facebook.com/MableWoolseyElementary.
Knox Community Health Center
In May 2023, the State of Illinois began the process of Medicaid renewal after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The state is finding that many are losing their healthcare coverage because the policy holders have not done the renewal process or they no longer qualify. In the three years since the last renewal process people have moved, changed phone numbers, forgot about the renewal process or are new to the program and don’t understand what the renewal process is.
The Knox Community Heath Center has been asked to assist with getting the word out about the renewal process.

Background Knowledge Explained
The uppermost strand of Language Comprehension represents background knowledge. When a reader knows a lot about a topic, that background knowledge strengthens their comprehension of the text.
Students bring prior knowledge to school, including their cultural experiences and practices, exposure to related content, and previous instruction. As students learn, their prior knowledge grows. It is important to note that students’ prior knowledge may be incomplete or include misconceptions.
Students bring a diversity of prior knowledge to school. English language arts curricula should strategically select, sequence, and repeat key topics and ideas to help students build specific background knowledge for reading. Building background knowledge ensures all students can access new content, regardless of the depth or accuracy of prior knowledge.
Today’s background knowledge is tomorrow’s prior knowledge—once students develop their thinking and commit their knowledge to long-term memory.
