MCH Student eNewsletter

Thank you to the MCH students who spent time reviewing, updating data, and making recommendations for our upcoming 2020 Report Card. We’re working on the new design and corresponding webpage (anticipated May 2021) but, in the meantime, we want to collect the names of the students who contributed to the new version. If you were in Dr. Bonilla’s PubH 6630 in Fall 2019 or Fall 2020 course and worked on updating these data, please provide us your consent to add your name to our webpage so that we can acknowledge your efforts. Submit your information by Wednesday, March 17, 2021.

To combat racism and enact lasting change, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota donated $5 million to the UMN School of Public Health (SPH) to establish the Center for Antiracism Research for Health Equity. Associate Professor Dr. Rachel Hardeman created the vision for the center and will serve as its founding director. Congratulations, Dr. Hardeman!

The Center is proud to present a new socio-ecological model on mental health and well-being (PDF). This visual illustration reflects what is known from the research about the individual, family, organization, community, societal, and other factors that positively or negatively influence individual mental health and well-being.This socio-ecological model was created through a partnership between the Center, UMN Extension Children, Youth & Family Consortium (CYFC), UMN Office of Human Resources, and the Minnesota Department of Health’s (MDH) Child and Family Health Division.

The latest National MCH Student Blog post is by UMN MCH student Delilah Robb from the UMN Center of Excellence (CoE). Delilah’s post focuses on MCH Competency 11, Working with Communities. The National Blog is co-hosted by the UMN's Center for MCH, and highlights the research and work of trainees affiliated with sister training programs affiliated with the HRSA-funded CoEs or Catalyst programs.

Associate Professor Dr. Zobeida Bonilla gave a talk with three other speakers on Minority Populations in Minneapolis on February 17, 2021 as part of the UMN's Gold Humanism Honor Society Culture in Medicine Seminar Series. She discusses Latina MCH, specifically around birth outcomes.

Thinking of traveling this spring break? This Washington Post article addresses the advice and recommendations for traveling from the CDC and Center faculty member Dr. Jaime Slaughter-Acey. “If you just absolutely feel that you need to travel for a vacation, try to pick a vacation spot ... where the activities require less interaction with other people,” Slaughter-Acey says.

Cultural competency skills focus on understanding and responding to diverse needs, assessing organizational cultural diversity and competence, assessing effects of policies and programs on different populations, and taking action to support a diverse public health workforce.

The UMN - Twin Cities is seeking an Assistant Director (Research Project Specialist 3) in the Office of Community Engagement to Advance Research and Community Health (CEARCH) within the Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI).
