OBOB- Help Needed!
We need OBOB Volunteers!
‼️The Oregon Battle of the Books is back!
Registration for the year is complete and the kids couldn't be more excited, but we can't host OBOB without a lot of VOLUNTEERS, being an entirely volunteer run program.
OBOB motivates students to broaden reading interests, increases reading comprehension, and promotes academic excellence. There's no better way to encourage your students than to be involved yourself!
Moderators and timekeepers are needed for every battle. Battles run through January and February during school. They are an absolute blast to be a part of, and the students are always super grateful.
Parent volunteers must attend one of the two scheduled trainings to moderate the OBOB battles.
In person: Sato Library 8:30 - 9:30 am on Dec 5th, 2023
Zoom: Dec 6th, 2023 at 7 pm. Link available at the sign-up page.
Please Sign Up to attend.
If you are interested in volunteering or just want to know more, please email SECO OBOB coordinator, Chris Yule - ChrisYule@gmail.com

Lend a Paw Student Council Winter Drive for McKinney Vento
The Sato Student Council is proud to present their annual winter drive event. Every year since Sato has opened it has been a tradition to collect items to donate to a local cause. Student council will be collecting donated supplies from November 27th-December 8th. Below is a list of the items being collected but stay tuned for more information from Student Council!! All items need to be new.

Spread the Warmth with Toyota and Clothes for Kids!
We're teaming up with Toyota to "Spread the Warmth" during our Clothes for Kids Coat Drive. Our goal is to collect 400 new or gently used coats by December 13. For every coat donated, Toyota will one, too! Please drop off coat donations at Sato Elementary, the District Administrative Office at 1260 NW Waterhouse Avenue in Beaverton or at Beaverton Toyota at 4300 SW Murray Blvd in Beaverton.
Thank you for supporting BSD students!
Gift Cards to help Sato Families in Need for the Holidays
If you are able, will you please donate a Fred Meyer gift card(s) for families within Sato who need a helping hand? Gift cards will make it possible for families to purchase what they need, whether that be food, clothing, household items, or even gas. If you would like to help another Sato family in need, please bring a gift card(s) in the amount of $10-$25 to the front office at Sato with "attention, Lesley Conway" BEFORE DECEMBER 7TH.
This will allow time for us to distribute the gift cards to families. Last year, our community's generosity was abundant and we raised over $4000 to support 83 individuals, including 54 children. This year our goal is to increase gift card donations to $4100 to serve even more families in need.

Students must reside within the Beaverton School District boundary or currently attend a Beaverton School on an approved Inter-District Transfer in order to apply to an Option school.

Equity Information
Did you know that December 3 is International Day of Persons with Disabilities?
What is it?
International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992.
Why do we commemorate it?
Persons with disabilities have often been portrayed as un-able people. That is wrong. We learn about extraordinary individuals with disabilities all year long at Sato, and we take extra time to honor them in December.
Did you Know?
One billion people live with disabilities. Of these, 80% live in developing countries.
One in every ten children is a child with a disability.
Should I be saying “differently abled?” According to the UN, “differently abled” is problematic because we are all differently abled. Euphemisms are, in fact, a denial of reality and a way to avoid talking about disabilities. “Persons with disabilities” is a more neutral term than “differently abled”.
Neurodiversity is a way of looking at dyslexia, ADHD, autism and other learning differences and seeing not disability, but simply natural variation in the human genome.
Family discussion questions:
A common misconception is that persons with disabilities can not make their own decisions because they might make a mistake. Why do you think that is? Actually, every person has the right to make their own decisions. Why is it important to understand the truth?
What can you do to learn more about the contributions of people with disabilities?
A stereotype is an often unfair and untrue belief that many people have about specific groups of people. What is one stereotype that you have heard about people with disabilities? Why is this stereotype untrue? What can you do to dispute any stereotype, including those about people with disabilities?
Looking for books to read about neurodiversity and characters with disabilities?

SECO Year End Fundraiser
Hello Sato Families!
In the next few days, your students will be coming home with a flyer for SECO’s Year End Fundraiser.
As many of you know, SECO helps fund many programs and events at Sato including OBOB, Art Lit, Popcorn Fridays, Cultural Night, field trips, PE & music equipment, teacher classroom supplies, and much more!
We are currently well below our fundraising mark for the end of 2023. With our student population growing and a few more months to go before our annual Raccoon run, to help us continue to assist the school, students, and staff we are asking families that are able and willing, to make a tax-deductible donation to SECO.
Visit our website (https://www.satocommunity.org/events/year-end-fundraiser) to make an online donation or to learn more about the impact SECO has on our school. Alternatively, checks made out to SECO can be turned in to your student’s teacher. As always, we encourage families to check with their employer about donation matching as that helps us benefit doubly from your donations.
If we reach our school-wide goal of $15,000 by December 31st, students will earn a free movie with popcorn during their lunch period!
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Thank you for your support!
