CDW Weekly Wrap-Up

It was a great week here at CDW! There are many highlights in this week's Wrap-Up to share some of the wonderful planning by the teachers and learning by the students happening here at CDW!

As I visited many classes this week and sat in on instruction, I continue to value the different types of learners there are in education. One way to become a successful student is to know your learning style. Does your child learn best as a visual learner, auditory learner, or tactile learner? Here is a short quiz by Education Planner if you are curious to see what learning style works best for your child(ren), or even yourself. We all have our natural tendency for retaining new information, and knowing our learning style is the first step to becoming successful!

Just a reminder, at the bottom of each CDW Weekly Wrap-Up are upcoming, important dates!

The teachers will take the opportunity to enter comments about your child(ren) and how they are doing with the content in each class. These comments are compiled in a Mid-Marking Period Interim Report. This will continue for each marking period of the school year.

If you have any questions about any of the comments on the Interim Report and/or grades that you see in the Grading module, please feel free to contact the teacher(s) for more information.

The Mid-Marking Period Interim Reports will be available for parents to view on Tuesday, October 12th at 12:00 PM.

The CDW Picture Day will be on Tuesday, October 19th. Your child(ren) should have brought home a form with information on how to order. All students will take an individual photo that day, whether a package is purchased or not. There will be retakes in November, and more information about that will be provided at another time.

We are collecting plastic film in the three containers outside of CDW. Once a month, from October through April, our CDW students in the Environmental Justice classes will retrieve the collection bags, weigh the contents, and track our collections. Our custodians will then bring our recycling to the collection center. In April, we will find out how our school ranked in the collection of recyclable plastic film. If we collect the most in our school size category, we could win another Trex bench for our outdoor classroom! Please see the flyer below for more information!

The 5th Graders in Ms. Park's class are learning to format titles correctly. They showed off their title formatting knowledge in a fierce battle with friends and discovered a fun way to study the content!

Art students in 7th Grade have been hard at work creating value scales with paint. Ms. Watters taught them about cubist works from Picasso and Braque, and they are now creating their own cubist style paintings! See examples below!

The 8th Grade Art Extension is creating Yayoi Kusama inspired pumpkins! Using recycled materials, students created the shape of their pumpkins, then covered them with a layer of plaster gauze. Next class, they will paint them and decorate them in the style of Kusama!

The NJHS members, led by Mrs. DeSciora, have been hard at work volunteering their time around the community. This past week, they volunteered their time at the TBD Book Fair, and Mrs. DeSciora received noteworthy feedback that they were "FABULOUS!"

This week's hallway is featured in the 6th Grade Hallway across from the Media Center. The CDW Knights are fabulous readers, and Ms. DiPisa created this board to encourage students to share and browse the titles on the books' bindings!

Both teams are off to a great start! Volleyball, led by Coach DiPisa, is 4-0. Soccer, led by Coach Gagliano, is 3-0. Way to go Knights!

Each month, Dr. Da Giau sends out a District Newsletter highlighting the wonderful happenings in the Old Tappan School District. If you happened to miss it yesterday, here is LINK.

Mrs. Richardson created an 8th Grade Google Classroom that houses all of the information that you need to prepare your child for NVOT (coming soon) or applying to other high schools.

Every 8th Grader has been invited to the class and has access to the information.

If your child is applying to a high school other than NVOT, please send Mrs. Richardson (richardson@nvnet.org) an email by Friday, October 1st to let her know.

All 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade students will be asked to bring in a combination lock (as seen in the picture below) by next Wednesday or Thursday depending on when they have afternoon PE class. They will also be asked to bring a change of clothes (T-shirt).

Optional: Your child can bring a change of bottoms(shorts/sweatpants), old sneakers, & stick deodorant to keep in their PE locker as well if they would like. SPRAY COLOGNE OR FRAGRANCE is prohibited in the locker rooms. More information will follow during Back to School Night on 9/23. Thank you!

The Student Government is selling CDW Spirit Wear! There will be examples of colors and sizes in the Lynch Gym during Back to School Night. Click this LINK if you would like to order!

CDW, led by the Environmental Justice class, will participate in the NEX-TREX Recycling Challenge again this year! We are competing against schools our size nationwide to win another TREX bench for our outdoor classroom. Drop off your plastic in CDW's outside containers starting in October!

The PTO is looking for volunteers to join the board and committees for next year!

Volunteers play a huge part in the PTO and what we are able to offer our students and teachers. Without volunteers, many of the programs that students, teachers, and families enjoy will not be able to happen. Volunteer descriptions can be found at: OTPTO.org under "More Info" and then "Flyers."
