Dear LISD Families,

This month, we are shining the light on the character habit of ownership in the elementary school. Students are talking about what it means to be responsible for their own learning and to participate/engage in class and school lessons and activities. Here are five questions you can ask your child at home to help them take the habit of ownership to the next level:

1. What is one thing you have tried that you would like to continuing practicing?

2. What is one question you still have about something you have learned?
3. Imagine your friend was absent today and they asked you to explain a lesson or assignment. What would you tell them?

4. Tell about a mistake you made recently and what you learned from it.

5. Explain what you do when you don't fully understand a skill or concept you are learning in school?

In secondary, we are preparing for the Term 1 awards ceremony. After each term, we celebrate students for the four habits of character: kindness, belonging, ownership, and perseverance. We call them habits instead of traits because the word "habit" indicates growth and development rather than something you received at birth. Kindness and belonging are relational character habits that make it possible for students to develop healthy and meaningful relationships and contribute positively to the community. Ownership and perseverance are performance character habits that help students be successful at school and in other pursuits. At our character awards ceremonies, teachers and other staff members present awards to students who have demonstrated one of more of these habits.

We love that our habits of character are k-12. At every age and grade, we are sending the same message and looking for ways to acknowledge our students for setting a great example and making school a positive and productive place to learn.

Please tell all the local veterans you know that we are having a whole school assembly to honor them on Tuesday, November 8, 10:10-10:55 in the LISD gym. Our ASB officers and representatives are planning and facilitating the event, and they are also hosting a tea party for veterans in secondary room 4 (Richard Tetu's classroom) following the assembly. The first graders are excited to see this new addition to the Little Lobos Reading Center. The elementary students were happily surprised when they visited the library, as they had seen this wonderful dragon in front of the Lopez Village Market. Artemus is a gift to the library from the artist, Rick Wigre. Thank you, Rick, for your contribution to our school library!

Middle school boys basketball games start next week. You can come see the Lobos play at home on Wednesday, November 9 and Thursday, November 10. Game time is 2:15

Chaperoned by our counselor, Jeanna Carter, and our librarian, Deirdre Steinbrueck, a group of LISD high school students attended the Seattle National College Fair today, and had an opportunity to interact with admission representatives from a wide range of postsecondary institutions.

The Heritage Spanish class planned and facilitated a wonderful presentation on El Dia de Los Muertos. They invited staff, board members, parents, and community members, and they served us delicious traditional food after the presentation. Heritage Spanish is a class for fluent Spanish speakers. The teacher, Al Torres, is helping bilingual students work on becoming biliterate as well, but he is also creating a space where Spanish is spoken freely, traditions and stories are shared, and culture is celebrated.

Dear Lopez Families,

The Lopez Island Family Resource Center together with LISD and community partners, such as the Lopez Library, KWIAHT, ALIGN, and Voices and Visions are planning out-of-school time programs for two age groups: K-5th graders and 6-8th graders. We are very excited to offer enriching learning activities FREE of COST to families funded by a 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grant.

Themes: Arts and Crafts, STEM, Design, Culinary Day, Sports and Active Games, Music, Dance, Youth Leadership Opportunities, Literacy, Homework "Club" and more.

Participants will have a choice in projects and activities that best fit their interests.

Please remember to use the south Driveway, along the side of the bus barn when dropping Off your student in the morning. Also for staff for parking. The buses are coming in at variable times, and it is not safe to use the entrance in front of school.

- 1.0 FTE Special Education Teacher - We are looking for a full-time Special Education teacher to help serve our students starting this school year. This is a 7.5 hours per day, Monday through Friday position qualifying for paid time off, retirement, and insurance benefits!

-Special Needs Behavior Technician- If you have been thinking about being a Special Needs Behavior Technician for Lopez Island School District...well you are in luck!!!! We are looking for a Special Needs Behavior Technician to hire for this school year!! Behavior technicians are responsible for assisting behavior specialists and the Special Education department to implement behavior reduction and skill acquisition treatment plans. The candidate will assist students with day to day activities, monitor their behavior, record and collect data on students’ progress, and communicate with the team.

- Special Services Administrative Assistant- to provide assistance to the Special Services Coordinator and the District’s Special Services programs. There will be a high degree of confidentiality and attention to detail required, as this person works with parents, students, and others to serve students with special needs and those struggling with school. There will be some flexibility of schedule desired, but the position is based upon 15 hours per week throughout the calendar year.

- Van Driver - Want to get out and see the island? This transportation position drives a wheelchair van (or another vehicle) to transport student(s) with special needs to and from school. This 3.5 hour per day, Monday through Friday. This position qualifies for paid time off, retirement, and insurance benefits!

- ParaEducators and ParaEducator Substitutes - Interested in working with students individually, in small groups, and/or in general classrooms and helping assist teachers in modifying student behavior? You can apply to become a ParaEducator with a regular schedule or else a ParaEducator sub for flexibility!

- Cook/ Dishwasher Substitutes- Help make and share all the FRESH, HEALTHY, and DELICIOUS local foods with the children and staff of Lopez Island School! We are looking for some help in the fast-paced, fun and friendly kitchen at Lopez Island School.

- Bus Driver Substitutes - Lopez Island School District is accepting applications for qualified school bus drivers substitutes with potential for upcoming permanent positions. Candidates must be appropriately endorsed for CDL and Washington State School Bus driving, or be willing to complete a training class administered by Lopez Island School District (likely late October/ early November 2022).

- Stipends:

Elementary RTI - provide intervention support for the purpose of improving academic and/or behavior achievement in different elementary settings.

HI CAP - providing leadership of the Special Service Program for Highly Capable (HC) students, grades K-12, in the Lopez Island School District.
