Celebrating the Class of 2021
Dear Atholton Families,
Class of 2021 -- We Celebrate You!
Last Tuesday we celebrated the outstanding accomplishments of our seniors at the Senior Awards Ceremony. To have our students assembled in person was truly moving and a welcomed sight. As I said, the awards ceremony is a reminder of the outstanding accomplishments of our talented students. The scholarships awarded, military academy appointments, and the department and administrative awards are all the result of perseverance, perspiration, and personal performance to achieve perfect success. Congratulations once again to our award recipients.
Shortly after the Senior Awards Ceremony, the athletic field was transformed for the Senior Celebration. Students got to “hang out” with their classmates and engage in several activities ranging from cornhole, kickball, and other carnival-like games. Honestly, it was truly less about the activities and more about reconnecting as a senior class. Afterward, seniors headed over to the village center where the PTSA arranged for Chick-Fil-A and Kona Ice. Students continued catching up and enjoying the food. It was a great day!
Lastly, this past Thursday, teachers, and parents ventured out to deliver yard signs to seniors. I was joined by Board of Education member, Jennifer Mallo who spent the entire day traveling with me to deliver signs. We enjoyed getting to visit homes and speak with students and parents and learn about their post-graduation plans.
It truly was a week to celebrate the Class of 2021!
For the next two weeks, our seniors will begin preparing for graduation. There will be two mandatory graduation rehearsals on May 19 and May 26 from 8:30 am to 11:30 am. Please see the reminder below.
The period to request a change in status has closed. We have processed all requests to move from virtual to hybrid and those seeking to move from two-day groups to the five-day group. All students will remain in their current status until the end of the school year.
Finally, in light of the new state orders from Governor Hogan relaxing mask requirements, Dr. Martirano provided the following new HCPSS Guidelines:
Graduations
In alignment with the Governor’s new orders, Merriweather Post Pavilion has eased attendance restrictions for this year’s high school graduation ceremonies, and we expect to accommodate additional guests. We are currently working with Merriweather staff to determine the exact number of additional tickets each graduate will receive based on venue logistics and will communicate that early next week. Masks will be required at all times at the graduation venue and physical distancing is advised for all unvaccinated individuals.
Athletics
Beginning Saturday, May 15, 2021, attendance at all HCPSS outdoor athletic venues will be opened to full capacity. In alignment with the State’s orders, all attendees other than competing student-athletes must wear masks and physical distancing is advised for all unvaccinated individuals.
Outdoor Mask Requirements
Also beginning Saturday, May 15, 2021, HCPSS will no longer require masks to be worn outdoors while on school property, other than at athletic contests noted above. This includes outdoor recess, eating school meals outdoors, physical education classes, and other times when students, staff, and/or visitors are outside on school grounds. Masks may still be worn based on individual discretion, and social distancing during these times continues to be strongly encouraged to the extent possible. Masks will also continue to be required inside schools based on the State’s orders.
Wishing everyone a fantastic week!
