Middle School Community Meeting March 1

Candidates Certified for April 5 JEGB Election
Voters in the Normandy Schools Collaborative will have the opportunity to elect two candidates to the Joint Executive Governing Board at the April 5, 2022 election. The candidates on the ballot are:

- Harlan Hodge
- Violet Taylor
- Catasha Jones-Moran
- Joseph Zenon
- Robin Blount
More information is forthcoming. A candidates forum hosted by the St. Louis Branch of the League of Women Voters will be held Monday, March 21 at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom. (The link will be posted in the coming weeks.)
Lucas Crossing Celebrates Black History Month
Lucas Crossing Complex is hosting several local Black History icons this week as part of its Black History Month observance.
Wednesday featured visits from St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell and Clay Farmer, Director of Security and Community Engagement for the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney and a Normandy graduate. About 10 students selected for their high academic achievement and good behavior got a chance to ask questions of the duo. The guests shared what inspired them to go into law and criminal justice and how students can achieve their goals.
Entrepreneur and Normandy graduate Dallas Holland also met with students and shared her journey to owning multiple businesses in the St. Louis area and what inspires her to pursue new opportunities.
On Thursday, Shameem Clark-Hubbard, 26th Ward Alderwoman for the City of St. Louis, will meet with students and share her story and keys to success.
Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park 2022 Family Nature Programming
Registration is now open for the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park in 2022! These fun, educational, multi-session opportunities are available at no cost to low-to-moderate income families living in north St. Louis County.
Families can attend a three-session program to learn about native wildlife through science observational activities. Dig deeper into nature exploration by attending a seven-session program. Participants should dress for the weather, be prepared to be outdoors and on foot for the entire program, and traverse uneven terrain.

Experiment and Play at WozED Demo Day
You're invited to experiment and play at WozED Demo Day, an evening of hands-on learning and fun to promote K-12 STEM education. The evening will introduce students to the amazing opportunities that our district can provide, featuring activities involving donors, coding, animation and more.
Normandy High School is the first WozED Pathway School in Missouri, a program started by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to revolutionize STEM education. This hands on session will help students explore technology and career pathways available at NSC.
Join in on the fun Wednesday, March 2 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Normandy High School, 6701 St. Charles Rock Road.
Humanity in the Middle Essay Contest Open to Students
Humanity in the Middle, an organization dedicated to bridging the gap between people of color and the police, is inviting 16-17 year old scholars to participate in an essay contest where the winner will get an all-expense paid trip to explore African-American history and culture.
Applicants should submit an essay between 500 and 1,000 words about an African-American figure or even that has influenced American history and culture. Students are also required to submit three letters of reference and complete 8 hours of volunteer service.
Winners will travel to Jackson, Miss., to visit important African-American historic landmarks.
Deadline to apply is Tuesday, March 15.

County Apprenticeship & Career Pathways Showcase to be Held for Grades 6-12
Special School District of St. Louis County, the career and technical education provider for high school students, is hosting the St. Louis County Apprenticeship and Career Pathways Showcase. Three events will be held across the county, which will feature regional employers and apprenticeship representatives who are seeking new talent and are eager to meet with students in grades 6-12 and recent graduates.
Events are planned for the following dates and locations:
- Saturday, Feb. 26, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Eureka High School
- Saturday, March 5, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., North Tech High School
- Saturday, March 12, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., South Tech High School

STEM Saturday Academy is Enrolling Now
Middle school girls can now sign up for STEM Saturday Academy through Black Girls Do STEM. The 8-month STEM experience triggers increased curiosity through education, access and opportunity for science, technology, engineering and mathematics in black girls.
Deadline to register is March 1!
All programs are FREE to district families and run from February to October. The academy meets once a month and can be done in-person or virtually. Sign up online at BGDSTEM.com.
Walgreens Expressions Challenge Scholarship Competition
The Expressions Challenge allows young people to use their creativity to share how they feel about what is happening in their world through a work of art, spoken word, or music dance video for a chance to win cash prizes!
The contest is open to 13-18 year olds and the deadline to enter is March 31st. Additional information on the Expressions Challenge is available here: https://expressionschallenge.com.
St. Louis County COVID-19 Vaccine Incentive Program
With children ages 5-11 now eligible to get vaccinated, they are also eligible for the DPH’s vaccine incentive program. St. Louis County parents or guardians will receive gift cards if their children 5 and older get vaccinated.
To qualify for this incentive, individuals must:
- Live in St. Louis County
- Be 5 years of age or older
- Get fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at a Department of Public Health (DPH) vaccination event.
Families with multiple children are eligible to receive gift cards for each child who is fully vaccinated.

Free COVID Testing
NSC is offering free saliva-based COVID-19 testing at the Normandy Early Learning Center via a partnership with Washington University. COVID testing is available at a special drive-through clinic.
