OCTOBER 2022 PARENTS AS TEACHERS NEWSLETTER

CLEANLINESS
There is a changing table in the bathroom through the back door on the left in a single use family size bathroom. NO diapers should be changed within the classroom for sanitary reasons. Fecal material is considered a hazardous waste so parents should either bag up the soiled diaper to dispose of at home or ask the front desk person to contact maintenance to dispose of the contents that are bagged up in the bathroom.
NO FOOD is allowed in the classroom except nursing mothers and bottles unless it is part of the class. We have found snack crumbs and items left behind on the floor and tables which is a health and safety concern. There are children that may have diagnosed or undiagnosed allergies or that could choke on or react to any thing left behind that parents aren't expecting and cannot identify if dropped on the floor.
Our staff has very limited time before and after class to prepare and clean up the classroom. Thank you for being safe, responsible and respectful.
SAFETY CONCERNS
If you have questions or concerns about this, please contact Elizabeth Themm via email ethemm@gbcs.org

ALPHABITS CLASSES
Description Alpha Bits:
Alpha Bits will include a story, movement and activities to encourage literacy skill building & school readiness (ages birth-5 yrs). Topics are repeated throughout the week. Please select only 1 date/time to attend. This class will begin promptly at their scheduled times.
Transitions:
Please use the playroom before and after class as time for your child to transition to/from the classroom. The benefits of transitioning children into/from an activity is that it helps them understand the event and allows them time to adapt to the change, which can reduce and prevent tantrums.
Cleaning Up
We also ask parents and children to help clean up after class and open play. This teaches your child to value their environment and helps them learn skills they will use for the rest of their lives.
If you are interested in attending a class, please click on the date and complete the sign in form. Please be aware that class content will be the same throughout the week.

BABY SIGNS
Baby Signs: Sign Language is a great tool to communicate with children who cannot yet speak. Babies can often learn and use simple signs before they can verbally speak. This class will help parents and children to learn signs to help them communicate with each other. Baby signs will focus on communication and strengthening fine motor skills. The group is geared toward birth to two but siblings are welcome.
If you are interested in attending Baby Signs class, please click on the date and complete the sign in form.

Social Emotional Learning Parent Education Class
Social and emotional development, a critical aspect of overall brain development, begins at birth. Social emotional skills are nurtured through daily routine, language and play. They are the foundations of social competence that affect a child's ability to adapt in school and to form successful relationships throughout life. This workshop on social and emotional health provides parents with tips and tools for helping their children develop skills in these critical areas.

Conscious Discipline
The Perry Center Early Childhood Team is currently participating in a training created by Dr. Becky Bailey called Conscious Discipline.
Conscious Discipline empowers us to be conscious of brain-body states in ourselves and children. It then provides us with the practical skills we need to manage our thoughts, feeling and actions.
With this ability to self-regulate, we are then able to teach children to do the same. By doing this, we help children who are physically aggressive (survival state) or verbally aggressive (emotional state) become more integrated so they can learn and use problem-solving skills (executive state). When we understand the brain state model, we can clearly see the importance of building our homes, schools and businesses on the core principles of safety, connection and problem-solving.
If you would like to learn more about it, please click here
You will notice that we are teaching "I Love You Rituals" in our classes. To see more about why we believe this is important, please watch this video
