Toolbox and Project ideas

This presentation was designed using S'more! It's yours to keep and share! If you share, please (and thank you) give credit. :-) S'more is an easy (and free) way to create and share an online flyer. I hope you are not disappointed that I'm not passing out chocolate and graham crackers!


This is simply a toolbox...a few examples created by elementary students in response to a project or assignment. These are not the final outcome of a project. They were used to gauge excitement, spark exploration, ignite conversations, join collaborative groups, and to start the process of finding answers to student questions. Remember that technology is simply a tool but it is not the learning objective.

Vocaroo is a very simple voice recording tech tool! It's free and no account is needed. It allows you to create audio recordings without installing software. After you are happy with the recording, you can publish, embed, or download it instantly. You can also create a QR code that links to the recording with the click of a button.

Collaborate

Big 6 Research in collaboration with the classroom teacher and LMS

Create

Students create "Biography Buddies" replicating their biography study. They use Vocaroo to record their monologue and generate a QR code.

Present

Families and students are invited to a Biography event to scan QR codes, view the Buddies and learn more!
Feel free to use this past presentation on QR Codes. It includes directions and more ideas for using the little black and white squares!

Digital Portfolios

All students in grades 3-5 created a "Digital Portfolio" to house their Art, Technology, Writing, Music, and Chinese work. Students use a variety of apps and web tools in order to display their work.

Weebly for Education is free for educators and is a simple way to create classroom websites, student digital portfolios, and websites for projects. It is a drag & drop website editor and easy to use with students of all ages. Weebly allows you to protect the environment for students to express themselves while using a variety of multimedia features.

30hands is a fun app that can be used for digital storytelling and so much more! Students or teachers can create stories or presentations based on photos or images and then narrate. The presentation is then stored on the 30hands Learning website and can be embedded into other works or downloaded. This tool has so many amazing features and is an all day presentation alone! Check it out.

Historical Self Portrait

After creating 19th Century historical self portraits, students reflected on their art, the process, and vision of living during this time period. View

My Hero

Following the completion of a "What Makes a Hero" unit, first graders wrote a persuasive paragraph. The entire class uploaded their images to one presentation in order to make a class ebook. View

Where I Live

Second graders were expressing difficulty in differentiating between city, state and country. We used Google Earth to locate each. Students took screen shots and imported them into the 30hands app. They recorded over each slide. View

Thinglink is my favorite tool for making images interactive! You can download the free app or use it online. Take (or upload) any photo. Click anywhere to add a bullseye. Students can either add text to each point, a link, or even take a video. All images are stored on the cloud. You can share by email, embed, or hyperlink to URL.

Native American Dwelling

5th Grade students created Native American homes. The displays couldn't stay up forever, so they snapped a picture and used Thinglink to discuss important features. View: Native American Dwelling

Olympic Graph

4th Grade students were interested in the Olympic symbols this year! Since they were practicing reading a graph, groups of students used the 2014 medal count, along with a Big6 research activity, to create this Thinglink. View: Olympic Graph

All About Bears

Kindergarten students completed a month long Big3 research project on an animal of their choice. They used Popplet to organize their information and then created their Thinglink. 4th grade buddies helped out with the technology. View: All About Bears

  • Students under 13 must have parent/guardian consent.

This is an easy way to create a professional looking guide! It is web based as well as an app. This example is a third grade class publishing their expository writing (how to).
Screenchomp is a free whiteboard app. It records touchscreen interactions along with your audio. When complete, you share your recording to Screenchomp.com in return for a shortened URL.
Popplet is a "mind map" tool that lets students organize their ideas. Can be used on mobile devices as well as web based.

Lesson Examples

Tellagami is a mobile app that lets you create and share a quick animated Gami video. Gamis can be shared on Facebook, Twitter or sent as a text or email.
Take (or upload) a photo. Draw a line for the mouth. Record! Share! This is a free app to turn pictures into talking pictures. Recordings can be up to 30 seconds long and finished products can be saved onto your camera roll or to your YouTube channel. ChatterPix Kids is the same app without the sharing features.

Knovio is a free, online presentation tool that allows you to bring Power Point presentations to life. For this project, first grade students used PebbleGo to research penguins. With the help of a 4th grade buddy, they used Keynote to organize their penguin research and inserted corresponding photos using Creatvie Commons. The buddies helped upload the slides into Knovio and the first graders added narration over the photos.

Storybird and 30hands SMASH

After publishing their Story Bird, students took a screen capture of each page and saved the photos in the camera roll. They uploaded the photos into 30hands and added narration to create a digital book. View Example
Photo Mapo is an iPad app that allows you to add photos to maps. There are many different templates to choose from. You can either use the location services to tag places or type in the address. For this project, students created a postcard showing different battlefields they were researching during Social Studies. They located the landmark, imported a photo from KYVL, and saved the photo into the Pic Collage app to add text and save to the camera roll.

In order to publish the project, and to take it a step further, students loaded their photo into Thinglink (described above). They added text, photos, and YouTube videos to make the photo interactive.
