Trust-Based Relational Intervention in our Classrooms
Founded by Dr. Karyn Purvis at Texas Christian University, TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. While the intervention is based on years of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research, the heartbeat of TBRI® is connection.
Because of their histories, children who have experienced trauma have changes in their bodies, brains, behaviors, and belief systems, and therefore need caregiving that meets their unique needs and addresses the whole child. That said, we’ve found that all children benefit from a nurturing, trusting relationship with a safe adult.
No matter their history, our teenagers often have a hard time with self-regulation. Hormones, self-esteem issues, peer pressure and pressure to succeed are all factors that make self-regulation difficult for our students. A key part of TBRI modeling self-regulation. A phrase I often repeat to myself comes from Becky Bailey's Conscious Discipline program, "an escalating adult can not de-escalate and escalating child. Co-regulation must begin with the adult.
I've attached the TBRI Engine Plate for you to use to check how your engine is running. You can also use it with students to see how their engine is running. If you have student that is running too slow and needs a snack or too fast and needs to get him or herself together please call us in the CIS room or send the student to us. We are happy to help.
