Rochester Rows!
Written by George Weiner Naiades Oncology Rowing Board Member
After a seemingly interminable hiatus, Rochester rowers are happily back on the water. Rowing, for those unfamiliar, is a lifelong sport that bolsters both body and mind. The confluence of the Genesee River and the Erie Canal make our area a world-class rowing venue, so Rochester may boast more programs than any other city in New York.
High schoolers row with the Brighton, Fairport, Mercy, McQuaid and Pittsford crew clubs. Graduates of these programs have gone on to row at scores of colleges and universities. Four local colleges -- University of Rochester, RIT, Nazareth and St. John Fisher support college crews. For athletically ambitious graduates with considerable rowing experience, there’s Flower City Rowing. Men and women can row with the Genesee Rowing Club and Genesee Waterways Center on the river, and the Rochester Boat Club (RBC) on the canal.
In addition to these, there are two very special groups -- Naiades Oncology Rowing and Rochester Community Inclusive Rowing (RCiR). The Naiades rowing program is committed to serving the physical and emotional needs of all cancer survivors. They leave cancer behind one stroke at a time through the healing effects of being on the water. RCiR also provides a supportive, inclusive and accessible environment for veterans and anyone, with any challenge, who wants to come to the water to learn to row and experience its therapeutic benefits.
Rowing can be either a team sport or individual activity. You can row competitively against other crews, or just enjoy the camaraderie of recreational rowing. Area events include the Pittsford, Liftbridge, Pull the Plug regattas and the Genesee Sprints. The two-day Head of the Genesee Regatta brings high school, masters, and collegiate crews from throughout the Northeast to Rochester. For a non-competitive event, RBC annually sponsors the Amazing Row, a 26 kilometer row on the canal. Sculling alone can provide an almost Zen-like experience. Rowing on the Genesee in the company of ducks, geese, herons and beavers, you can almost forget that you’re in the midst of a major metropolitan area.
Rowing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, but Rochester winters don’t deter area rowers. The Pittsford Indoor Rowing Center provides for all types of rowing programming. High school, college, masters and adaptive rowers regularly use this facility.
Rowing is a superb aerobic and resistance training activity. Research has shown that rowing burns calories faster than most other exercise regimens. Rowing is also low-impact, so it minimizes joint strain. Moreover, rowing is a great way to ease daily stress by providing a substantial physical workout, while enjoying the calming affect of tranquil waters.
In 2021, Rochesterians are back rowing again -- strong as ever. Do yourself a favor and try it this year. Many clubs offer learn-to-row programs. You can get program details from each organization’s website.
Cheers Across the Pond for Remarkable Rowing!
History making took place for Ireland in more than one Olympic race with Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy winning gold in the lightweight double sculls rowing final against tough competition from Germany. In addition, the women's foursome Irish rowing team of Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe, Fiona Murtagh and Emily Hegarty came third taking home a bronze medal. They were the first female crew athletes ever to win an Olympic medal for Ireland. Congratulations to all of these Irish Rowers!
