November 2023
April 8, 2024 calamity day
Monroe Local Schools will observe a calamity day on Monday, April 8, 2024 due to the historically significant solar eclipse that will take place across Ohio and our region.
There will be no school for students or staff on this day and other campus activities may be altered as well.
Please note that any existing versions of the 2023-24 district calendar you may have previously saved or printed are now out of date, and the most up-to-date PDF can be found here.
The total eclipse is set to occur shortly after 3:00 p.m. on April 8 and is expected to draw large numbers of spectators to our area that could place additional demands on emergency services, local utilities and infrastructure. This could result in a safety issue at a time when students, families and staff would have been traveling to and from school for the day.
For these reasons we believe that canceling school on April 8, 2024 is in the best interest of our students, families and staff members. We hope that by providing this information well in advance it allows time for you to plan accordingly.

Did you know that Monroe High School is a Purple Star School?
Ohio's Purple Star Schools show a significant commitment to supporting the unique educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families. In order to receive the Purple Star designation, a school must demonstrate its commitment to serving military students and families through a series of required and optional activities identified by Ohio’s Purple Star Advisory Board.
Monroe Junior High and Primary schools are currently navigating the application process to receive their Purple Star designations as well. "Our hope is to create an inclusive environment for our military-connected students and families," said Monroe Local Schools Purple Star Liaison and Attendance Officer Kelley Dudleson. “Frequent moves, family separations through deployments, and reintegration issues make life especially challenging for military families."
If your student or family may be military connected, please contact Kelley at kdudleson@monroelocalschools.com or visit www.monroelocalschools.com/resources/military-resources/ to view resources and more information.
Earlier this school year, Monroe honored its military-connected students and families at the home football game on Sept. 8, and the district plans to host its second annual Military Signing Ceremony next spring to honor and recognize students who have committed to join the US military following graduation.
"We have tremendous respect for not only our military-connected students and families, but our veterans as well," said Dudleson. "On Veterans Day, we recognized our veterans across the district with a special shoutout and lunch provided by two local restaurants."
Recently, Monroe High School began hosting monthly meetings for military-connected peers that occur during the school day, and more special events are planned at each school building during the Month of the Military Child (April). In addition, a voluntary roster of district staff who have a spouse or child in the military is now being kept to provide networking opportunities and peer and student support.
