Important MUSE Program Updates
An important announcement was shared from our beloved, MUSE program manager Beth Vandervennet, see below:
'After 12 meaningful years of leading the Oakland Symphony MUSE program in partnership with OUSD, big changes are ahead for me. I am honored and excited that I have been recruited to the position of Associate Artistic Director of The Crowden Music Center, starting September 1st.
While excited for the possibilities, I also feel bittersweet about this change because it has been such a gift to work with all of YOU.
Diane Lang and I are excited to announce bringing in Marielle Allen as MUSE Coordinator. Marielle is a flutist and recent UC Davis graduate, as well as former OUSD student who participated in MUSE and Oakland Youth Orchestra. This is a dream come true for me, I am leaving the program in great hands with one of our own!'
Join me in wishing Beth a warm farewell. We will miss Beth and are inspired by all of the outstanding work she has done through her leadership of the MUSE program.
We wish her much success in her next endeavor!
You can still see Beth during our main stage concerts, as she will continue as a cellist in the Oakland Symphony orchestra!----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We hope that each of you had a relaxing summer that gave you time to enjoy rest and rejuvenation.
We had a busy summer at the Oakland Symphony.
Our youth orchestra went on a Central European tour in July with performances in Prague, Czech Republic- Vienna, Austria and Budapest, Hungary.
Auditions for youth orchestra began in June, openings remain in the following sections: bassoon, horn, trumpet, percussion, and bass.

Some of our team members attended national and statewide conferences to expand our orchestral network and approaches to innovative strategies alongside Symphony Orchestra's from across the country.
We held instrument petting zoos and exposed youth to instrumental music at Oakland public libraries and City of Oakland Park and Recreation town camp programs.
Our education department confirmed a new partnership with Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute Link Up program as one of more than 100 orchestras to join their longest running music education offerings.
Carnegie Hall’s Link Up program introduces students in grades 3rd–5th to the orchestra by helping them to become a part of it. Students all over the country and around the world come together with their local orchestras to learn about, listen to, and perform great music.
In August our teaching artist came together at the Oakland Museum of California for a day of professional development before returning to our Oakland USD classrooms!
Seats are available for Ravishing Rachmaninoff with Shiyeon Sung
The South Korean conductor Shiyeon Sung is a real trailblazer of her profession. She is the first female conductor out of South Korea to make the leap to the podium of internationally renowned orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin and the Bamberg Symphony.
When she was appointed assistant conductor at the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2007, her reputation as one of the most exciting emerging talents on the international music circuit was already secure: shortly before, Shiyeon Sung had won the International Conductors’ Competition Sir Georg Solti and the Gustav Mahler Conductors’ Competition in Bamberg. During her three-year tenure in Boston, she began a close collaboration with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted their season-opening concert in 2007. In 2009, the orchestra established an associate conductor’s position especially for her, which she held until 2013.
