On Thursday 8th September we celebrated the birthday of Mary, Our Mother, Mother of Jesus, Queen of Heaven and Mum to us all. As a Marist School, Mary is our role model and as our Mission Statement says: Inspired by Mary, we use our Head, Heart & Hands to know, live and share the joy of the gospel.

What attributes of Mary do you try to live—-strength, love, compassion, willingness, prayerful, faith filled, a woman of action, patience? There are so many more.

Let us continue to draw on the strength of Mary and know that she is always with us. Happy Birthday Mary.

SACRAMENTAL CELEBRATIONS

Two weekends ago we celebrated with our children their Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist. We were fortunate to have Bishop Steve Lowe ( our new Bishop of Auckland) celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation and our very own, special Father Carlo celebrate the Sacrament of First Eucharist.

A huge thank you to the teachers of the sacramental programme and to the teachers at Marist School for preparing our children so well. The children were extremely focused and present this year. They were respectful & reverent and thoroughly enjoyed joining the church whānau at these special celebrations.

We pray that our children continue to join us at the Table of the Eucharist every Sunday and continue their faith journey with their whānau, the parish & school communities. God Bless our tamariki!

HOSPITATLITY AT CHURCH

Our School Community has taken on the responsibility of providing morning tea for parishioners after the 10am Mass on the 5th Sunday of the month this falls on Sunday 31st October this second half of the year.

Any volunteers to coordinate this would be greatly appreciated and everyone is asked to please contribute a plate. This is how we continue to build community and strengthen school and parish relationships.

OUTREACH

Thank you so much Marist whānau for the very generous donations of both your time and money. Having provided a number of meals to our community we still still have 25 small and 21 large Marist Meals in the freezer!

Please pass this message on to anyone who collects or drops off your child/ren. Our children are precious and can easily go unnoticed around our driveways.

GOLF DAY

After the annual Golf day being delayed due to the covid scare, and not wanting the name “Marist” to be associated with another super spreader event, we finally got out on the course on Friday.

The week before, the weather caused much consternation with the persistent and consistent rain, however on the day the weather couldn’t have been better. Despite this, the previous rain did mean carts weren’t available so everyone got their steps in!

Once again a strong field of golfers, ranging form semi - pro to once a year, set forth to conquer the goat track that is known as Maungakiekie Golf Course. The field consisted of new to Marist parents, almost finished Marist parents, long finished Marist parents and friends of Marist - all in pursuit of the chance to have their names live forever on the fine piece of laminated MDF that hangs in the school office, and its associated bragging rights. The Annual Marist Golf Day shield may be humble in form, but it is prestigious in repute.

Melissa and Michelle made sure everyone was registered, and all was in order.

After being fed by Mt Albert's sausage sizzle king Gerard Thompson, and hydrated with a cold, brown and refreshing beverage, our intrepid golfers set off. Due to a reduced field we had a staggered start this year, and set off from the 1st and 10th holes.

The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all with great shots, terrible shots, banter and the enjoyment of an afternoon away from work, supporting the children (and maybe a brewery or two) all in the line of duty.

Though there was no drinks cart this year, the players were well hydrated with two drinks stops. The farthest being manned by the ever friendly Peter Richardson. At the end of a fun filled day, players retired to the club house to regale each other of their exploits, longest drives, best putts, the fashion sense (or lack) of some players, stories of lost balls, buy raffle tickets, and enjoy a fine meal while waiting to hear the results.

In the end it was a close fought thing with the winning team on the day, Hoof Hearted, taking the win for the second year in a row. With an aggregate 54.12 the winning team consisted of Bruce Proffit, Paul de Quaastiniet, Brian Bellingham and Heath Brown. Close behind was Mt Albert St Judes on 56.815 consisting of Dave Cleet, James G Flocchini, Fred Russo and Fialli Fui. Third was Number 1 Signs.

Sinead Hart repped for the ladies by scoring the longest drive, and our great long time supporter, President of the Mt Albert Bowling club, Nathan Haturini, getting closest to the pin - if you didn't know, 2022- 2023 is the 125th anniversary of the Mount Albert Bowling club so get along for a game or a beverage.

Again, the real winners on the day were the children with an excess of $2,500 being raised.

MARIST MOVIES IN THE HUBS

This was a lot of fun for all last year - and now there's another great chance for our Marist community to get together for this free event.

Please join us on Sunday 18th September 2.00pm - 5.00pm (movies will commence at 2.30pm)

Three age appropriate movies will be running, and our PTFA will be providing pizza for the children. Meanwhile the grown ups can get together to meet, greet, and catch up. Parents are welcome to BYO nibbles and drinks.

The Marist PTFA is planning its major fundraiser - Quiz and Fizz Night. You have heard about the exciting plans to upgrade our school hall, so we have a key fundraising target to meet. Donations of any items which could be used for auctions would be appreciated: vouchers to businesses, the use of a family bach for a weekend, even services which you could provide to the community. At Marist School we use Spotlight to upload and share your child/rens ongoing progress and achievement throughout the year. The last couple of years have been so disruptive but it is really important that you download the APP in order to see your child’s learning progress.

I baked mini-pavs for Cultural Week.

My Mum told me to make the recipe I am very good at which was mini-pavs.

First things first, I had to add egg white. I had to make sure there was no yolk in it or it would have ruined the whole thing.

Second, I have to whisk it up until it was nice and rich and creamy.

Thirdly, add a little bit of sugar at a time until it dissolves. This should take 10 minutes.

After that mix some cornflour and some white vinegar.

After that, use a piping bag to pipe the mixture. I accidentally used a cupcake toppings pipe but you should use a flat one.

Then, heat up the oven for an hour. Leave them in the oven for 34 minutes.

Serve with whipped cream. That's how you make mini meringues!

Hub 2 tried them-they thought they were really good, great and delicious!

On Friday the 2nd of September Hub 2 went to MOTAT because we are learning about NZ innovation, sport, food and adventure. We went to the classroom and saw old phones. We loved looking at the old electronics. In the photo Mrs Politini was taking a photo of us and we were taking a photo of her!

We went on a tram to the other MOTAT. We wanted to get off but we weren't allowed!

We went to the old fashioned fire station, the evil old school, the pump house and the old jail.

On August 25th the Year 6's went to the Auckland Writers Festival and we had an AMAZING experience! We met some of the world's best authors including Tui T Sutherland, Maria Gill, Tom E Moffat and TK Roxborough.

They talked about their books and it was very inspiring hearing about the authors' journeys through writing. We were touched by some of their stories and how they came to be writers. Their books are filled with laughter and at the end of their books there is always a cliffhanger.

We hope they make more fun-filled books in the future!

Thank you Kevin Senio (Amelie's Dad) for coming to Hub 2 this week. You shared with us your role in the setting up of 'Moana Pasifica' as an innovative way of championing Pacific people through the sport of Rugby. We loved learning, testing our rugby knowledge and also the free posters and hats! Fa'afetai!

Today Olly and Hunter hosted the first ever Marist History club. There were 16 historians.

We discussed and learnt about all the World Wars and Napoleonic Wars, the Cold War, the Space Race and the FBI. Some people created slides on what we learnt or knew about.

We had lots of books for researching our interests. The most common choice was World Wars.

Anyone can join the History Club if they want but they have to be Years 4,5,6. It is held on Thursdays at 1 pm in Hub 1. Bring your lunch and any history books you are interested in.

Last Thursday six Years 5 and 6 teams from Marist went to the Eden Albert Netball Tournament at Windmill Road. There were 53 teams in total. We all played five games of netball and the Marist teams worked really hard making a great effort to represent Marist School. Marist Langman came second out of all the Year 5 girls teams.

Everyone enjoyed their matches and made the most of every game. It was a fun experience and we want to thank everyone who helped make the day possible! Thank you parents and teachers. You are Awesome!

The girls from Marist College did an amazing performance and told us about their villages. They showed us tongan dances. They told us about the rules like don’t eat off your dads plate because your dad is the chief of your family. One of the dances the girls did was done at a wedding or a birthday. The girls talked about their names in Tongan and in English.

Dumplings!

Last week we had fun in the kitchen making dumplings. First, we harvested cabbages and spring onions from the garden. Next, we made dumplings in the kitchen.

This week we made chickpea burgers with herby sauce and fries. Delicious!

We were also busy in the garden putting mesh on the bottom of our compost bins to keep pests out of there!

This year we are continuing with Marist Meals - a pastoral care initiative. These meals are provided to families in the school & parish community when a little extra support is needed (e.g. a new baby, sickness, bereavement). With the impact of covid and many of our school and parish families isolating or unwell, it would be great if we could fill up the freezer so we can help lighten the load for families during these challenging times.

If you would like to contribute, we welcome any homemade, brought meals or baking for our freezer. Meals can be dropped off to the school office.

St Mary's Parish Foodbank is feeding nearly 2000 a month. PLEASE remember them when you are shopping - they are in desperate need of donations! Anything you can contribute will be very much appreciated.
