WMS Weekly Warrior
January 22, 2024
Good Afternoon Woodbury Middle School,
It looks like we might be able to manage a whole week of school this week, fingers crossed. As many of you have read in past letters, we continuously encourage families to get our students to school and be on time. The state of Connecticut grades all schools in a report called the Next Generation Accountability. Woodbury Middle School needed improvement in the area of chronic absenteeism. To address this we have asked families to assist us in getting students to school on those days when students would rather stay home. We have also asked for assistance with students who are often tardy to school. We are happy to report that our numbers in both areas have decreased. We know how hard the winter months can be with illness, and it is important to stay home when students are sick, but it’s everyone’s responsibility to get to school when we can. Thank you, everyone, for your assistance in addressing these attendance concerns.
The Super Bowl pancake breakfast is back at WMS. WMS is reviving this great community event thanks to the Alliance leadership group. Breakfast will be served on Feb. 11 from 9-11. On Friday, our Alliance team sent a letter requesting items to make the breakfast successful. The letter with all the items needed can be found here.
On Friday students were able to cash in their live school points for cool items from our school store. Some students were able to buy some time in the gym and art rooms while others cashed in for ice cream at our snack bar. One of the most popular items was to follow a friend’s schedule or skip an IXL lesson. Thanks to Mrs. Shuhart and Mrs. Rocco for taking the lead in this PBIS based activity.
Please welcome Jessica Lopa to our music department. She replaces Phaelon Koski who accepted another position outside of our district.
For planning purposes, the athletic director at Nonnewaug High School has asked us to announce practice schedules for next fall.
The CIAC has issued start dates for fall sports that are much earlier than normal. Please plan vacations accordingly as athletes need to have 10 practices completed before their first contest. Here are the starting dates:
1. Golf on 8/12
2. Football on 8/15
3. All other sports are on 8/19
We are including this information regarding NWEA testing from last week’s newsletter.
Once again, our students will take the NWEA MAP Growth Assessment in Math, ELA, and Science. The results of these tests will be used to determine your child's instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year. Please support your child by encouraging them to take these tests seriously and to put in their best effort. We also ask for your support by ensuring that your child eats a nutritious breakfast, is well-rested, and has a charged Chromebook for the day of testing. NWEA testing will begin on January 30th and 31st, with ELA testing. Science testing is on Feb. 2, and Math testing is on February 6th and 7th.
Have a great week,
