Naiades 2020 Golf Scramble Tournament -The Best One Yet!
One of Our Rowing Coaches Heads to International Graduate School
Rachel Yuhas has unselfishly contributed three years of valuable coaching services to Naiades Oncology Rowing.
Rachel started rowing her freshman year of college at Loyola University Maryland as a walk on to their Division 1 Varsity Team. During her spring season, Rachel sustained a back injury that would made it impossible for her to continue as a rower, so Rachel transitioned into the role of coxswain (steersman) for both the Men's and Women's Teams for the next three years. Rachel loved rowing right from the start, first because of the physical challenge it presented to rowers and then the mental challenge it afforded to coxswains.
In retrospect, Rachel claims she I prefers coxing, because she loves being able to see and align the rowers getting everyone on the same page, working towards a common goal. Additionally, Rachel has never been one to walk away from a challenge and coxing allows you to be the one in charge of navigating and overcoming those challenges.
Coming out of college, Rachel claims she wasn't sure how she would fair as a coach, but the Naiades community was unbelievably welcoming and positive. Through her own experience with rowing being highly competitive, Naiades was exactly what Rachel needed to fully understand what a healing and positive environment rowing can create. Every woman who came through the boathouse was an inspiration to Rachel with their joy and passion. The love they have for the water and for the sport taught Rachel that there was more to rowing than winning. According to Rachel, the best experiences you will have on the river are the ones you have when you are connected to each other by community and love. Rachel states she will forever be grateful to the Naiades community for allowing her to join us on the river and experience our love of rowing and commitment to each other.
In the fall, Rachel will begin her graduate program in International Conflict and Media at the University College Dublin in Ireland. In addition to being incredibly excited and passionate about the work Rachel will be doing, she is also excited to be able to live and explore in Ireland. As an avid hiker Rachel plans to take full advantage of the Irish landscape, as well as continue to row with a local Irish club.
You will be missed Rachel. We are externally grateful and excited for you; and as they say in Gaelic: "Go gcuire Dia an t-ádh ort" The Best of Irish Luck to You! in your travels.

Keeping Row Ready
Your Jet Fuel for Rowing
Multitasking, in a hurry on the go?
In order to maximize your rowing performance devote some of your attention to what you eat before and after your rowing experience because it will impact your performance. It should be a must to provide your body with the right kind of energy (aka food and fluids) necessary to take you throughout your session.
Before rowing, a nutritious high carb and low protein meal two to four hours will supply your body with the necessary glucose and fluids you need. Add onto that a brief snack i.e. cereal bar, banana or dried fruit thirty to forty minutes before embarking. Post rowing, readily ingest a light carb, followed by a high protein meal within one to two hours. Tip to remember, increase the carbs pre rowing and increase the proteins post rowing.

"Optimism is like a muscle that gets stronger with use. When you want to build a muscle you've got to keep using it. That's how you have to be. I'm an eternal optimist and so I can find those little silver linings, those little moral victories. It takes courage to believe that the best is yet to come."
