Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Community,
Beginning the week of November 29th we will welcome a new Reading Intervention Specialist to our Community!
Debbie Carwitz brings a culmination of over 20 years of teaching, mentoring and leading as an educator to this position. Ms. Carwitz will be serving the needs of our kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders in collaboration with Mrs. Graham who serves the needs of our 1st-8th grade learners. Together, they will address reading challenges and help students make accelerated progress and get them on the road to reading success.
Debbie has two amazing children who are away studying at college and a six-year-old lovable fluffy dog named Fin. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, reading and spending time with friends and family. Welcome Debbie, we are so glad you are joining us!
All of us are so grateful for all of you! See you again on Monday, November 29th.
Wishing you the very best!
Principal Engdall

Message From Laura Hildwein
What is Gratitude?
Gratitude is a feeling of appreciation or thanks. It is about focusing on what is good in our lives and being thankful for the things we have.
Gratitude is pausing to notice and appreciate things that we often take for granted, like having a place to live, food, friends and family. It is taking a moment to reflect on how fortunate we are when something good happens — whether it's a small thing or a big thing.
Gratitude can have many positive effects on your life.
Gratitude can improve your physical health. People who exhibit gratitude report fewer aches and pains and an overall feeling of good health.
Gratitude can improve your psychological health. Grateful people enjoy a sense of wellbeing and happiness.
Practicing gratitude can help improve your sleep. Practicing gratitude regularly can help you sleep longer and better.
Gratitude can enhance your self-esteem. People who are grateful have increased self-esteem, partly due to their ability to appreciate other peoples’ accomplishments.
Gratitude can increase your mental strength. Grateful people have an advantage in overcoming trauma and enhanced resilience, helping them to bounce back from highly stressful situations.
Gratitude helps us build better relationships. When we feel and express gratitude and appreciation to people in our lives, it creates loving bonds, builds trust, and helps you feel closer to others.
Gratitude can lead to positive actions. When we feel grateful for someone's kindness toward us, we may be more likely to do a kindness in return.

Garden Update
Greetings!
New blossoms opened this week, including our first mammoth sunflower. This gave the students more variety to pollinate during our pollination lesson. Cosmos, marigolds, zinnias, black-eyed Susans, allysum and Mexican torch also sprang forth. There is going to be lots of color and diversity out there for our last few weeks of 2021.
We sold some arugula at the PTA meeting and raised a whopping $7.00. We will have more produce for sale at the next meeting. I ask parents, faculty and staff to wait until after the meeting to make your purchases. We do not want to distract attendees from the important agenda items that our president will announce.
Only a few hens are laying at this point. Hopefully, by the end of December they will all be producing eggs. Eggs are already in high demand. If there are ever any extra eggs available for the community then I will notify everyone in the newsletter. We will take any empty egg carton donations!
Please mark your calendars for the holiday concert on December 7th and 9th. The garden will be open, and we will be serving salad samples and hot chocolate. See you there!
Our tree planting has been placed on hold while we coordinate the concrete pour for the outdoor kitchen. Please be wary of the holes on campus. We don’t want any accidents.
We can always use coffee grounds and can donations. Please make sure the coffee grounds have been brewed. You can pick up used grounds at Starbucks for free. We also prefer that your cans are uncrushed (the small kiddos love this task), however, we will accept crushed cans as well. You can drop them off at the table outside of the front office entrance.
We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards
