James Lick High School 2023-2024
Week of March 25-28, 2024
A note from Ms. Gubuan
Happy Tuesday to our Comet Parents! I want to invite you to join our School Site Council meeting this evening via Zoom or in person in room 1303 at 6pm You can click here for the link to Zoom and/or click here for agenda. Two important discussions will occur this evening, our additional perimeter fencing as well as our first read of our SPSA - Single Plan for Student Achievement. I look forward to seeing you there.
This is a reminder that the Mobile Clinic will be here tomorrow, Wednesday, March 27th in the front Parking lot from 9am to 4pm. They will be here to help students with Family Planning, Physicals, and Teen Care. Please make an appointment with Ms. Valle in the Wellness Center to get a pass to the clinic. You can also email me at vallep@esuhsd.org.
Friday night was so amazing at our 3rd annual Carnival/Night Market. Major shout out to our ASB/leadership students and Ms. Telebrico for putting this great community event together. Due to the rain, it was moved from the stadium to the quad, and I think that was a blessing in disguise because it made it feel more intimate and connected. We had food booths and trucks, artisan craft vendors, jump houses, carnival games and redemption booth, and lots of laughter and fun. Thank you to our staff who supervised and helped make the event safe, secure, and positive, as well as staff who came with their families to just enjoy the evening. Also, many thanks to our custodial team for helping with the set up and break down of the event. It was a great effort by all and truly a magical night for our Comets!
Higher Ed day was fantastic last Tuesday! Thank you to our College Access Programs and counseling team for putting it all together. Thank you to our teachers who facilitated a school wide lesson to our 9th graders. Our college fair was a success, and its a great opportunity for our students to connect with lots of information for their future. Our next event that allows students access to information for their future is CometCon on April 16.
HOBA brought volunteers from META to come and do some beautification projects at our school last week. They painted a peace walk and worked on the garden. We also received our big chess pieces for the chess board in the quad. We have such a great partnership with HOBA and I am so thankful that they help bring color and visitors from the tech world to our school.
Now that the 2023-24 school year is almost coming to a close, we need your feedback to ensure that schools continue to provide inclusive, high-quality, rigorous, and safe learning experiences for all students. This email includes a link to a survey for you to share your opinions about what is going well and what could improve.
Directions for Survey-Taking:
To submit the survey online, please visit the website listed below by April 30th. You may use a computer, tablet or smartphone to access the online survey.
http://surveys.panoramaed.com/eastsideunion/family
If you have more than one child enrolled in the same school and or at different schools, please fill out one survey for each child, as your answers may vary.
All survey responses are anonymous. Panorama Education is managing the survey process to ensure data privacy and security.
By taking this survey, you will be helping us to better support you, your students, and the whole school community. Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your voice, and for being a a valued partner.
This is a friendly reminder that we have No School on Friday in recognition of Cesar Chavez Holiday. Next week - April 1-5 - our school campus will be closed. There will be no school for students. Please enjoy the holiday break with your families.
Have an amazing week Comets!

Hands on Science at James Lick
Thank you to our very own Ms. Huynh for facilitating opportunities for our students to engage with Science. Yesterday, students participated in the FAST Stanford Symposium. To quote Ms. Huynh, "...is the culmination and celebration of 9 months worth of research and experimenting, 2 years of work in Masah Kikhia's case! James Lick and Andrew Hill's FAST students came together to showcase their projects, take lab tours, complete a scavenger hunt, listen to faculty and student talks, and win fun awards. There was a lot of smiling, laughter, and some tears when high school seniors and grad students were acknowledged and honored at their last Symposium. It was a long day, but a great day full of excitement, wonder, and joy." The following students won an award yesterday:
- Masah Kikhia - Building a particle accelerator to observe quantum behavior
- Thao Pham and Khanh Tran - What is the best way to kill mold?
- Khanh Doung - Can we make a song even if we don't know how to sing, and in another language that we cannot speak?
After school last week, we held a STEM Career presentation by Dr. Thomas Wunderer. Thank you to Ms. Huynh, "A total of 15 students participated in the two-hour presentation and hands-on activities. Thomas gave a short presentation on how LEDs work, the production of LEDs in his lab, and the many uses of LEDs. Students had a blast putting on cleanroom suits, tinkered with LED prototypes, and used a microscope to view the GaN layers on the semiconductor chip used in the LEDs. Thomas was impressed that our students could follow along with the science in his presentation (great job science department!) and enjoyed answering their questions."
Two wonderful opportunities for our students! Please see some pictures below. Go Comets!

Join Us for LCAP meeting with Ms. Marquez - Wednesday March 20 at 9am or 5pm
Provide your input at our 2024 LCAP Session at JLHS
Dear Comet Parents...
You may have heard that ESUHSD is undergoing its first year of developing the three-year Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). This plan explains the district's goals along with the actions and measures that progress us towards those goals. It is also tied to approximately $20 million in funding aimed at supporting English Learners, Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Students, Students with Disabilities, and Homeless and Foster Youth.
The LCAP is driven by data and the identified needs of all members in our community. Input from parents, students, and staff is used to develop a plan that addresses our district needs
We will be hosting an in-person session to receive your input on the 2024 LCAP. The sessions will be held in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. I invite you to join us!
LCAP Input Session at James Lick High School in The Learning Center (HUB)
Wednesday, March 20
9am - donuts served
5pm - dinner served
I hope to see you there! You can also learn more about the LCAP and view previous year’s LCAP’s at bit.ly/2024LCAP

A Note from Ms. Gubuan
Happy Tuesday Comet parents! Time is flying by and we are just days away from Spring Break! Our spring sports are doing a phenomenal job. Please see Ms. Chavez' schedule below so you can come and cheer on our baseball, softball, badminton, track, and boys volleyball teams! On Friday, please come out and have fun at our annual Carnival/Night market starting at 6pm in the Stadium. We will have lots of food, games, inflatables, and fun! You don't want to miss it! Bring the whole family! Follow our Instagram @jlhscomets for more information.
This week is Spirit Week! See Ms. Telebrico's post below about what your student should wear each day this week. Today is Crocs and Crazy Socks!
I'm sure your students have shared with you our cell phone initiative that we will intentionally remind, review, and support the students on. Our teachers have been collaborating to enhance our students' classroom learning experiences. One distraction that is most apparent is the use of cell phones during learning time. I hear yours and students' concerns about losing access to their cell phones in class. I understand but it is also important that as adults we help students practice and learn how to use their cell phone responsibly and appropriately. While cell phones can be valuable tools for research, educational gaming, calculations, translations, and other educational purposes, their misuse can get students to lose your focus. So, as part of our Comet expectations, we have expectations regarding cell phone usage in classrooms. These expectations include putting cell phones away, especially during learning time, either in cubbies, boxes, or pouches found in your classroom, or within your backpacks if allowed by the teacher. Our goal is to create an environment where students can really focus on learning and reach their full potential. As our teachers are growing and shifting practices to be able to teach and reach each and every student, we are reminding and supporting students to also take responsibility for their learning by keeping distractions low and dedicate class time to their education.
Another significant topic I wish to connect with you on is the installation of additional perimeter fencing around our school. This represents a positive step toward enhancing our security and safety. In the upcoming week, we will be conducting a listening opportunities to gather input from students, staff, and parents regarding this initiative. You can share your ideas, opinions, and questions through a Google Form, accessible by clicking HERE. Last night at our Cena con la Directora, I was able to engage with parents (thank you!) on their ideas for our additional perimeter fencing. To get students' ideas, I'll be available in the quad during lunch on Wednesday, March 20, and Thursday, March 21. On Tuesday, March 26, at 6 pm, our Director of Bond Programs, Julio Lucas, will join our School Site Council meeting to unveil initial draft drawings of the additional perimeter fencing. I encourage you to attend and engage in this presentation.
I find great joy in witnessing your students' smiles, their growth, and see them thriving. My greatest wish is for our students' to have a great school experience, and I firmly believe that, together with you, our parents, our students, our dedicated teachers, and staff, we can make James Lick into the school that our students' envision.
Have a great week ahead, Comets!
Today, Tuesday March 19, is Higher Ed Day
Video for 9th graders for Higher Ed Day
A Note from Ms. Hernandez
Attendance Rate (3/11/2024-3/15/2024): 78.33%
Please reach out to the attendance office if your student needs to miss school. We are available to create a plan of support for your student. If no one picks up the call, please leave a message. We listen to all of our messages and will return your call. It is critical that our students attend school every day to succeed in their classes.

Week of February 12-16, 2024
A note from Ms. Gubuan
Hello Comets! This week is the last week of the 4th grading period. It is also ELPAC week, a big week of assessments for our English Learner students. Mr. Boostani and his team sent out passes to students for when and where they are to report for their ELPAC tests. Passing their ELPAC tests will allow for redesignation and appropriate placement in their EL courses. If you have any questions about ELPAC, please ask Boostani.
Our Silicon Valley Urban Debate League team, with their advisor Mr. Ghali had a huge win at this weekend’s debate championship at DCP (Downtown College Prep). Our amazing kids placed 2nd, only missing 1st place by 15 points. Loreta Rodriguez, Noah Perez, Dennis Nguyen, Mariah Salazar and Belen Corona have worked hard all season and came out with their first win. The debate was in world school style. Loreta won most valuable teammate and Noah won rookie of the year. There were 40 people and groups that were in the tournament and we won second place only missing first by 15 points. They have dedicated a lot of time and effort and ended the season on a huge win. Students only had 30 minutes to prepare speeches and counter arguments prior to debating! Congratulations to our Comets!!!
Thank you to Ms. Huerta, Ms. Blanco, CFJ, and SEC for putting together last Friday’s “Tarde de Unión y Noche de Fuerza” event. It was a great learning and community event for our Comets and student guests from Silver Creek and Independence, community organizations, and SJSU. Our students engaged in various workshops about financial literacy, mental health, college/career access, meditation, poetry, and more. The evening ended with dinner and an Aztec dancing presentation.
This is now the season where we also begin to review and refine our SPSA for the next school year. I encourage you to come and spend Saturday morning at school.

Week of January 22-26, 2024
A note from Ms. Gubuan
Happy Wednesday Comets! I hope you are with me in riding the positive vibes and good feelings of our school community. We aren’t perfect, no school is, the start of the 2024 calendar year and the 2nd semester has felt very promising and filled with excitement. The kids have been in good spirits and that brings me more joy than anything. We had media exposure last week with the press conference regarding the changes in FAFSA/CADAA. If you missed my email with the news links, you can click here and here.
Today, we are on an activity schedule because we will be practicing our Safety Drills during our activity period. Our safety drills include fire, earthquake, and run/hide/defend drills. These will be conducted in each classroom.
This week, some of your students may have been impacted by the closure of two of our classes - Math 2 and English 2 - due to low enrollment in our 10th grade classes. We apologize for the impact this has and the switches in your child's schedule. Our district office provides us with a directive on the balancing and courses we need to address at the beginning of each semester due to our enrollment. This happens to all of our schools in the district, not just ours. Our APED, Mr. Boostani, along with our counselors do their very best to ensure the least disruption in class schedule for each student, and connect with the student about the impacts. If you have any questions, you can reach out to your counselor.
I want to thank the parents, students, and alumni who joined us for our Dream Session on Saturday, January 13 to discuss and learn more information about the Community Schools initiative and the grant. It was a hopeful day spent dreaming about what we want James Lick to be, taking a real look at our data, and addressing our school's needs. I want to link the work from our dream session and surveys here, so you can take a glance at the work that happened and the discussions that are still continuing. I think that looking through the responses from the surveys is insightful. You can CLICK HERE for a view of the slides that we worked through for the dream session. You can CLICK HERE for the notes during the dream building part. Here is the goals, needs, and strengths self-assessment. And the Student Survey Report, Parent Survey Report, Staff Survey Report are here also. The next places where I will share this information will be at the School Site Council meeting on 01/30 then make any changes necessary in time to input our parts by Thursday, February 1 to our district, for eventual submission by the actual deadline sometime in February.
I am so excited that we will now be hosting an event to recognize our Honor Roll (3.5+) and A-G Comets (3.0+) from 1st semester. On Friday, January 26, students and their parents will join us to recognize our student's on Honor Roll while also enjoying a breakfast treat, coffee, or hot cocoa. We’ll be set up in front area of school, and will be giving out certificates and treats from 7:45am to 8:30am. 281 students earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher and received invitations to join us for breakfast. I look forward to celebrating them!
I hope you and your family have a great week ahead! Go Comets!

Week of January 8-12, 2024
A note from Ms. Gubuan
Welcome back to school Comets! Happy New Year! It has been a great 3 days of school so far and there are positive vibes all around. I am so excited for what this 2nd semester has in store. This week we have been on an activity schedule so that during the second half of 4th period, all classes have time to engage in our school wide lessons. These school wide lessons are so important in how we set the tone for the school year. On Monday, our admin team - myself, Mr. Boostani, Ms. Hernandez, and Mr. Villasenor - welcomed our students with messages of hope and reminding them to reset and sharing our Comet resolutions! On Tuesday, our students engaged with our lesson "Brave" focusing on Mental Health supports and strategies. Yesterday, Wednesday, students engaged with topics about having healthy relationships with their peers, friends, and family. Today, Thursday, students and staff will be taking a survey about what they love about our school and what their perfect school is like, as well as engaging in our Comet Expectations (includes behavior, safety, and technology). Tomorrow, Friday, our lesson will be about how to resolve conflicts peacefully and in a healthy way.
Please click on our PDF calendar above so that you can see what 2nd semester has in store for all of us. 2nd semester is when our state testing occurs, which will include our ELPAC testing for our EL students in February, SAT testing for our 11th graders who choose to take it, our SBAC testing for our 11th and 12th graders in April. and AP testing in May for students who are taking an AP class this year. This month, our counselors will begin to meet with each of our 9th, 10th, and 11th graders to discuss their course selection and options for the 24-25 school year! This time with the counselor is very important. Please chat with your child about the importance of keeping their appointment and being fully engaged with their counselor. You can CLICK HERE for our course information. We are currently working on adding descriptions to some of our newer courses like Data Science, Digital Photo, and AP Biology, so stay tuned for those additions.
To prepare for our part in the application for the Community Schools grant, we will be hosting a DREAM SESSION - Community Schools Planning Meeting on Saturday, January 13, 2023 from 9am to 3pm. During the DREAM SESSION we will be looking at our current situation(s) and data, dreaming up what we would like JLHS to be, and learning more about community schools. Students, staff, parents, and community members are invited to this day. If you would like to engage in this session, please CLICK HERE to indicate your attendance. Our work in preparing for this grant is parallel and aligns with our work as we prepare to collaborate on our 24-25 SPSA and our 24-25 WASC self-study visit.
I look forward to a great 2nd semester with all of you! Together we make James Lick a great school for each and every student and our community.
A note from our APA, Ms. Hernandez
Welcome back to the second semester of the 23-24 school year! Attendance is an important part of your student’s success. We had an 82% attendance rate last semester and are confident we can improve that with your help. Please talk to your student about how critical attendance is to their success and call our attendance staff to report attendance concerns and absences:
Itzel Gonzalez (habla Español): gonzalezit@esuhsd.org, 408-347-4431
Jerlene Gonzalez: gonzalezj@esuhsd.org, 408-347-4432
Our first attendance (ARC) meeting for guardians and students is on January 11, 2024. We have two meeting times: 9:30am and 6:00pm. Our special guest will be there for the morning session. If your student is chronically truant or struggles with attendance, the ARC sessions are mandatory.
Please make arrangements for your student to attend a Saturday Academy if they have a full day absence. This will help recover their absence and give them a safe space to do classwork.
Our Spring Safety Drills will take place on January 24th, 2024. These are drills that review the Run-Hide-Defend (in case of a school shooter), Fire evacuation and Earthquake processes to prepare us for any emergency.

Week of December 18-21, 2023
A Note from Ms. Gubuan
Happy Tuesday Comet families! Last week we had a great Spirit week which ended in two fabulous events - our Winter rally and our Winter Wonderfest! Thank you to our staff and student groups - leadership, ASB, and SEC - who coordinated, organized, and put it all together. Everyone had a great time and connected all of us as a community!
We are now in Finals and I hope the students are ready to finish their semester strong. Our last day of school is on Thursday, December 21. There is No School on Friday, December 22. We will return from Holiday Break on Monday, January 8.
You'll see the finals schedule here. The end of the school day is at 1pm. However, lunch will be served in our cafeteria until 1:30pm. I encourage all students to grab a lunch before heading home.
Yesterday, I awarded 5 students with a $10 dominos or jamba juice giftcard for winning our "caught you being good" raffle. Every week, we will aim to award students who are making good choices and meeting our Comet expectations.
During our holiday break, our offices and campus will remain closed. If you do have an emergency need to contact someone at our school, please feel free to send me an email gubuanh@esuhsd.org and I will try my best to help you. We will be hosting a few basketball and soccer games, as well as a wrestling match over break, so I may see you there!
I hope that you all have a great holiday break and that you will find time to laugh and enjoy your families and friends. I also hope to return to school on Monday, January 8 as a fresh start followed only by positive days. When we return, the week of January 8, we will be engaging students in school wide lessons each day to set clear expectations for them at school.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you! and also a Happy New Year!
Congratulations to our door decorating contest winners!
1st place door winner!
2nd place door winner!
3rd place door winner!

A note from Ms. Hernandez, APA
We want to thank those parents who sent their students to Saturday Academy on 12/9/2023. We were able to host over 110 students to recover absences and prepare for finals.
Attendance is the first step to graduation. We had an average of 82% over the current semester. While we make changes to improve our systems and interventions, please speak to your student(s) about attending on time and for the full day. Please contact our office to report absences and make a plan: 408-347-4400. Please leave a message if you aren’t able to speak to us as we are on other phone calls. We will be reaching out to those families who have students that are struggling with attendance including tardies to set up support meetings in January.
Detention: Our team began detentions in October and has been piloting an updated detention model the past two weeks. Detention is being held at the Hub on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons with the supervision of Advisors Jaspal and/or Cabigas. We have a Detention slip (created by Advisor Cabigas) that is handed to students. We collect their name, notify parents, and track completion of detention. We are targeting students leaving campus. We will be reviewing the model and making adjustments for the new year. Please be aware that if your student leaves campus, they will be asked to serve a detention.

Week of December 11-15, 2023
A note from Ms. Gubuan
Happy Tuesday Comet families! We are just days away from the end of the 1st semester. The grades that students earn at the end of the 1st semester are the official ones that go on their transcript. It's important that students earn passing grades so that they can earn their high school graduation credits and/or meet their A-G requirements for college. If students need help in getting their assignments completed or studying for their finals, we have 2 tutoring options available. 1) Online 24/7 tutoring available thru PAPER. Students log in via their ARMS application and they can connect with live tutors 24/7. 2) We have in-person tutoring in the Hub, Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday from 3:45pm to 5pm with JLHS staff. Of course students can connect with their teachers for their own 1-1 support.
This evening at 6pm, we will be conducting our monthly School Site Council meeting in Room 1303 or you can also participate via Zoom. You can CLICK HERE for the Zoom link. Also, you can CLICK HERE for the agenda and more information about our School Site Council.
Parents/Guardians, we need your help in talking with your students about staying on campus until the end of the school day. We are a closed campus which means that students are not allowed to leave campus for quick trips to Starbucks, Quik Stop, etc. As a parent, if you need to pick up your child early for an appointment, please come inside to the Attendance Office to check them out. Detention will be issued for students who leave campus during the school day. If your student was assigned detention, parents/guardians will receive a phone call home.
We have been giving lots of positive rewards for lots of positive behaviors happening all around campus. Our "CometStrong" caught you being good raffle tickets get the students excited to follow our Comet expectations and show good decision making. We have given out $10 Dominos or $20 Target gift cards to deserving students who win the raffle each week. Parents/Guardians help us encourage good and positive behavior at school, everyday. In addition, our perfect attendance Friday treats are also a hit and encourage students to get to class on time and not miss a period. Takis and Rice Krispies treats are just some of the goodies that we give out on Fridays to those who got to class on time every period every day.

Week of November 27 - December 1, 2023
A Note from Ms. Gubuan
Happy Tuesday Comet families!
We are 4 weeks away from the end of the 1st semester. The end of the 1st semester grades are very important as they are the grades that earn graduation credit, count for A-G requirements, and become permanent record on a student's transcript. If students need help with their schoolwork, we have tutoring after school in the Hub on Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday from 3:45 to 5pm. Please encourage your students to attend tutoring. Please also work with your students to access their Canvas so you can updated on grades and assignments. If you want to reach out to your student's teachers, please send them a message via Canvas or a direct email.
We are so excited to work with a great organization HOBA - HandsOn Bay Area - to help us bring light, color, and positivity to our school. HOBA volunteers will be painting large checker/chess board pieces, peace walks in both English and Spanish (to help students through conflict resolution), mazes, positive affirmations, and other pieces that bring our student community together. We can't wait to see the beauty that this brings to our campus and the light that it brings to our students.
We are kicking off our "caught you being good" system this week! Our staff is ready to recognize students who are meeting their Comet expectations, making good decisions, and good choices. Students can earn "tickets" and enter them for fabulous weekly prizes every Monday.
Please see our lunchtime activities calendar below. ASB has some cool activities planned for the month to bring positivity and fun to our campus!

- we are now in the process of seeking an additional social worker to assist us in supporting our students who are not finding success in getting to class or being school ready. In addition, our additional social worker will help support our Tier I behavior and social-emotional interventions for our students as well as our in-school suspension. This will bring us to a total of 3 social workers for our school.
- while we search for our new social worker, Mr. Noe Monje, our district social worker will be with us for a few days a week to help us provide the appropriate services and support to our students.
- we are also in the process of seeking an additional campus monitor to assist in monitoring and supervising our restrooms
Substance Abuse Counselor and YVAPE:
- we will have a part-time substance abuse counselor to work with our students who struggle with vaping and/or using other substances.
- YVAPE is a free educational program with phone coaching support for students who have been vaping at school. YVAPE is available to California public middle and high schools who will enroll students instead of alternative disciplinary action for vaping. YVAPE is designed to provide a positive experience for the student and help them think through their vaping behavior.
