Binders and School Supplies
At VandenBerge Middle School, we aim to equip our middle school students with the essential tools for success. Before taking on an administrative role, I taught Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) at the high school level. The skills emphasized in AVID serve as the building blocks for students to become prepared for both college and future careers.
Over the past two years, our primary focus has been on promoting organization. Every student is encouraged to maintain a dedicated binder for every class, ensuring that their coursework is well-organized. As we begin a new quarter, it's crucial for students to take the time to tidy up their materials, restock school supplies in their pencil pouches and organize their lockers.
Our school is committed to the AVID approach, which emphasizes Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading (WICOR). Our goals for this school year are threefold: prioritizing Organization through the use of binders, fostering a habit of Reading (independent reading with novels in hand during every class) and honing Writing skills through focused note-taking strategies.
The use of the binder and their current novel provides excellent opportunities for meaningful conversations with your student. When middle school students are asked about their day, they often respond with just a single word. However, delving into the contents of their binder opens up the conversation, allowing them to share insights about what they are learning and the assignments they are working on.
Additionally, take the time to inquire about the book they are currently reading. This presents another valuable opportunity to engage in conversation and encourage them to express their thoughts. By exploring both their binder and their reading material, you can gain a deeper understanding of their academic experiences and foster open communication.
Quarter One Report Cards
Final report cards for Quarter 1 are posted on Parent Portal.
Perfume/ Cologne
We have noticed a trend in students spraying a lot of cologne and perfume on themselves throughout the day. Out of respect for students and staff with allergies, please remind your students to refrain from spraying colognes, perfumes and/or body spray at school.
