The last day to request a schedule change for spring semester is Friday, December 13th.

Students can email or stop by Student Services to make a request.

Schedule changes will ONLY occur in January for one or more of the following reasons:

• You are missing a graduation requirement.
• Your schedule is incomplete, or a class is duplicated.
• You are enrolled in a course that you have already completed and received credit.
• You are enrolled in a course for which you have not met the prerequisite.
• Have a physical injury that does not allow participation in the course.
• You have a signature program error or conflict.

The SMN PTSA invites all parents, teachers, students, and community members to help support the numerous activities occurring at SMN by joining the PTSA. We have two winners (photo and visual art) moving on to the state level! We also one student receive an Award of Merit in the Literature category. A huge shout out to Erin Rivers and Kate Miner who helped promote the program.

The following kids participated in the Ray Pec Art competition in Thursday November 21. Brett Buckbee, Evangeline Ellingsworth, Riley Donaldson, Evey Goering, Alex Bennett, Audrey Diggs, Calyn Clark, and Greta Berg. Evangeline got first place in the hand building competition!

The Merriam High School Art show is on display now at the Irene French Community center. Every year they have about 1,000 entries. Around 100 are chosen for display and of those 100, 24 are given top awards. Three North artists were recognized among the top 24.

These students were among 151 works chosen from about 1,000 submissions. The work is on view from December 5 to December 28 at the Tim Murphy Art Gallery inside the Merriam Community center.

NEW YORK, NY - The Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced that the Indian, SM North’s yearbook, has been named a Finalist for its Crown Awards.

Crown Finalists are actual winners, not nominees. Some will be announced as Gold Crowns; the rest are Silver Crowns. Final results will be announced and presented at the CSPA ceremonies in March 2020. These awards summarize overall excellence in the entire publication and function as a “top-down” view of general excellence.

The Crown Awards honor top student publications chosen from CSPA’s members. Crowns are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison. During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. A total of 1,145 publications were eligible for judging.

2020 Yearbooks can be purchased through the bookkeeper in the main office or at www.yearbookforever.com through Jan. 10, 2020. Cost is $48 if purchased at school.

If you didn't purchase your book during fee payment, the money ($48) or a check made out to SM North, can be taken to the bookkeeper by January 10. If you would like to pay with a credit card, payment can be made at www.yearbookforever.com. Choose SM North. There is a $2 service fee if you choose to pay online.

After Jan. 10, only 65 extra overstock supply of yearbooks will be available for $65. These will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Once they are gone, none will be available.

Our NJROTC competed in their first competition of the season and they picked-up right were they left off from a year ago – competing against 7 schools from Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas the Indians took 1st Place in seven of the 10 Events and walked away with the Overall Championship. Outdistancing the 2nd place team by 340 points. It was a great way to kick-off the 2019-2020 season! Even more impressive is that it was the first varsity competition for 26 of the 35 kids competing! Here is a breakdown of the events:

This past Saturday the NJROTC hosted the 2019 JROTC Athletic Challenge. The competition consisted of 6-person teams participating in 6 events (Pull-Ups, Push-Ups, Sit-Ups, 1-Mile Run, 6 x 100 Relay and a Combat Fitness Test), in one of three categories; Male, Female and Co-ed. Competing against schools from Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska the Indians took home 1stPlace in all three categories!

The Male Team consisting of; Sam Seckar, Harden Boldt, Julian Gutierrez, Logan Mitchell, Brayden Dettmer and Mitchell Cheatham captured 1,166 of the possible 1,200 points in the competition to outdistance the second place team in the male division by 105 points.

The Female Team survived a tough showing by Willard High School from Missouri, but the team comprised of; Abigail Serling, Carlee O’Neill,

Danielle Silva, Perla Pena, Jade Morales and Viry Flores beating them 1,142 to 1,027.

Finally, the CO-ED Team consisting of; Eleanor McCarthy, Ingrid Valle, Jacob Smith, Sam Smith, Justus Hulse and Jordan Dorton captured 1st Place in all 6-events scoring a perfect 1,200 points and destroying the 2nd Place team by 281 points!

It was a great competition and the cadets continue to work their tails off! Next up will be a trip to Huntsville, AL in December for another Navy National Championship qualifying competition. Stay on the Attack!”

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the leading cause of death for student athletes. While our district doesn’t endorse specific testing, we do feel it is important to make it available if you choose.

On Saturday, December 14, 2019 and Wednesday, January 15th, ATS HeartCheck will be returning to Shawnee Mission School District to provide their comprehensive heart assessments. This program is the national leader in youth heart screenings operated by highly trained medical professionals and overseen by pediatric cardiologists. Through special arrangements, the HeartCheck is being offered to all kids ages 8 to 25 for the special price of only $129, normally $1500.

The Kansas Assisters Network helps families complete health insurance and social services applications and provides education about health insurance and how to obtain healthcare. They help families apply for Marketplace and Medicaid as well as connect with services in the community.

FOOD SERVICE….Did you know…………

Did you know ways to keep you and your family healthy during the holiday season? Please follow these 4 basic food safety steps to reduce the risk of foodborne illness: Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill.

Clean

· Hand washing is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of foodborne illness. Remember to wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds before and after handling food.

· Wash all kitchen counters, dishes, and utensils with hot soapy water.

Separate

· Prevent cross-contamination by keeping raw meat, poultry, seafood and eggs separate from all other foods.

· Designate one cutting board for fresh produce and another for raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs.

· Replace empty platters instead of adding fresh food to a dish that already had food on it.

Cook

· Use a food thermometer to ensure your foods have been cooked to the proper minimum internal temperature.

· Keep food at 140° F or above after cooking.

· Microwave food thoroughly to 165° F.

Chill

· Refrigerate perishable foods within 2 hours. Remember to store leftovers within 2 hours as well.

· Cooling food rapidly helps prevent bacterial growth. Large amounts of food should be divided into smaller containers before refrigerating.

· Know when to throw food out. When in doubt, throw it out.

Don’t forget – if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit. All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.
