What's Happening During Homebase!

Homeroom (or often referred to as “Homebase” at CMS) is where all students start their day off at CMS. It is a 43 minute block of time. Students who stay in their homeroom are expected to study, read, seek help from their teachers, or go to the library media center. In addition, there are a number of extracurricular activities that occur during this homeroom time. Informational meetings will be held for interested students. This is an ideal time to explore or expand an interest area and get to know other people. We hope to see you in one of these many different offerings.

Students should be listening to the daily morning announcements and looking for Schoology announcements for more information in the first two weeks of school.

CMS has three Art Club options for students to participate during homebase.

CAFA (Contemporary Applied Fine Arts) - 8th grade students who are thinking about going into art, who want to develop personal style, work independently on projects that interest them while exploring different media. They may also be called upon to do group work for the school.

MEVAS (Media Experience in Visual Arts Seven) - 7th grade students who want to explore art and see if art is something they would like to pursue further. Projects will be more teacher directed than 8th grade with a focus on developing techniques. They may also be called upon to do group work for the school.

Art Crew - For any student who would like to learn how to take care of supplies, hang displays, load and unload the kiln and anything else needed to run the art room. They may also be called upon to do group work for the school.

Chess Club - We are excited to start up the Queen’s Gambit Chess Club to CMS. Students will receive coaching from a chess expert as well as play chess with peers.

Choir - The middle school chorus program is a nice way for students to enjoy their love of music and showcase their vocal skills. The choir practices two to three days a week and perform in winter and spring performances. The chorus adjudicates every other year in the spring. Chorus is a graded subject which requires mandatory attendance during your child’s designated days.

Concert Band - The middle school band prepares for winter and spring concerts as well as adjudications. The middle school band has a tradition of building a team atmosphere with performances recognized across the state and country. Band is a graded course which requires mandatory attendance during your child’s designated days.

Intramurals - Typically two homerooms are invited down on a rotating schedule to take part in various team sports - dodgeball, mat ball, basketballl, spikeball, volleyball, pickleball, etc. Participation is always optional.

Gym Crew - The CMS Gym Crew members help the PE teachers in the morning to prepare equipment for intramurals and PE classes. PE teachers identify students who work hard, participate in PE class, have been seen as helping others and have a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Library Matters Crew - This group helps our librarian in a number of ways including checking in and out books, designing and setting up book displays and putting books away. Students who have a passion for reading tend to really enjoy their experience in the LMC.

Morning News Crew - The CMS morning announcements are read by student volunteers in front of a green screen. This is a nice opportunity for students to show off their public speaking skills. Reach out to Mr. Maffei (maffeim@cmsd.k12.pa.us) for more information.

Student Government - The CMS Student Council is an excellent way to bring a student voice to the building to share ideas and contribute to the community through volunteer work. Student council will meet on a regular basis during homeroom. Participation in student council can be via homeroom representatives and schoolwide officer positions.
