Happy New Year! We have had a great week back at school, our Thunder Eagles have been busy reviewing SOAR expectations this week.

We are ready to SOAR during 2023!

During the month of January, we are focusing on the character trait of Perseverance. One way to think about Perseverance is “pushing yourself through challenges and obstacles.” We all experience challenges in our lives. We all have moments when we feel like we can’t do it or that we want to give up on a big task. It is important to develop tools that help us work through those challenges in order to grow in those moments instead of giving up. How might you practice Perseverance as a family this month? Perseverance is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Strong. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like focusing, organizing, and goal setting.

This weekend ask your child what they are learning about perseverance!

Regional Elementary Curriculum Showcase*

When: Thursday, January 26th

Time: 5:30-7:00 PM

This district event will feature:

• Our Elementary core curriculum in Language Arts, Math, and Social Emotional Learning for each grade level.

• An opportunity to view our 5th grade Human Growth and Development (puberty) and HIV Videos

• Opt out forms will be available after viewing the videos for current 5th grade students.

• Meet and talk with some of our Liberty Ridge Elementary staff as well as teachers in nearby SBLSD schools.

• Obtain information about 2023-24 Kindergarten Registration and programs like READY for Kindergarten.

• Visit resource tables hosted by elementary specialists in PE, Music, and STEM.

• Light refreshments available

If you are unable to attend this event, please consider attending our other regional Curriculum Showcase:

• Tuesday, February 7th at Maple Lawn Elementary- 5:30-7:00

• Address: 230 Wood Ave. Sumner, WA 98390

*This is an adult event to provide parents with information about the elementary curriculum. There will be no activities for children nor childcare available.

As you may know, science and STEM have been experiencing a boost in exposure with Next Generation Science Standards and alignment between the overlapping fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. We are very proud in the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District to be hosting a true STEM Fair in which students can choose to enter the following types of projects:

• Science Project (K - 5 packet) and (6-12 packet)

• Engineering / Invention Project (K-2 and 3-5 packet) and (6-12 packet)

• Technology Project (K - 5 packet) and (6 - 12 packet)

• Reverse Engineering Project (K - 12)

One project per student, please! Project registration is due by January 13th, 2023.
