Mustang's Message
February 5, 2024
Principal Message
Dear Mission Meadows Families,
As we embark on the celebration of Black History Month, we are reminded of the rich tapestry of contributions that African Americans have made throughout history. This month offers a valuable opportunity for our children to learn about and appreciate the diverse and influential figures who have shaped our world.
In parallel, let's also emphasize the importance of Habit #6 from Leader in Me - Synergize. This habit encourages collaboration, teamwork, and the understanding that together we can achieve more than we could individually. Just as Black History Month encourages us to appreciate the strength in diversity, Habit #6 teaches our children the power of working harmoniously with others, valuing unique perspectives, and creating a more inclusive community.
Let's join hands in fostering an environment where our children not only learn about the past achievements of Black leaders but also embody the spirit of synergy in their daily interactions, ultimately becoming positive contributors to a more united and understanding society.
Sincerely,
David Peel, Principal

February Lunch on the Lawn/Make a Wish
We would like to invite all parents & guardians to come and join your child for a lunch on the lawn during their regularly schedule lunch time, but February's Lunch on the Lawn will be a bit different as it will be combined with a Make a Wish Fundraiser.
Vista USD has always been a big supporter of the Make a Wish organization through the Vista Big Give. At Mission Meadows our student lighthouse team has expressed a desire to participate in this effort in a couple of different fundraising opportunities. Our next lunch on the lawn will be connected to this "Make a Wish" Fundraiser. The day for each grade level's Lunch on the Lawn will be tied to the day of the week that they meet with Coach Kelly from YMCA for lunchtime sporting activities. At this event parents may come for lunch on the lawn, and then donate some money to remain and play an organized sport with their child until the end of lunch recess. The suggested donation is $5 per parent. Here is the schedule:
Tuesday 2/13
- TK - 11:00 - 11:45
- Kinder – 11:20-12:05
- 3rd – 11:40-12:25
- 5th – 12:00-12:45
Wednesday 2/14
- 1st – 11:00-11:45
- 2nd – 11:40-12:20
- 4th – 12:00-12:45
Important Additional Information:
- If you are planning to participate, we highly encourage you to keep your child in class after this event. Teachers plan many important lessons after lunch, and when a child is checked out early they miss these important lessons.
- Parents will be allowed on the field where the special combined sporting event will take place, but they will not be allowed on any other portion of the blacktop or playground to help ensure the safety of all students.
- If you are planning to attend, please complete this survey. This will help us get an accurate count of lunches that will need to be served in the cafeteria.
Have you heard about BOX TOPS?
- It's the only fundraiser that doesn't cost you anything and it's an amazing way to earn money for our school.
- How it works: You shop & buy groceries with the Box Top logo on the product, you scan your receipt into the Box Top App and a percentage of that purchase goes to Mission Meadows!
- We've made $684 so far this school year with less than 10 people participating! Imagine how much we could earn if more people participated?!?
Is Someone in Your Home Not Receiving the Mustang's Message?
It has come to our attention that not every parent or guardian is receiving the Mustang's Message each week because of the system that is used to send it out each week only connects to the first/main phone number or email listed on the Parent Portal. There is a way to solve this issue, but it requires you to come into the front office and speak to one of our amazing ladies, who will be able to make some adjustments on the school's end so more than one contact receives the important news and updates each week. It may be inconvenient, but it is the solution we are able to offer at this time to resolve the issue. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
Are You Mission a Jacket or Sweatshirt?
Is your child missing a sweatshirt or jacket? Everyday we collect 5-10 jackets left out on the playground by your children during their recesses. We have bags and bags of unclaimed jackets, sweatshirts, lunch boxes and water bottles. Due to the rain we have not been able to hang them up on the fence out in front of the school, but we will do that once the rain clears. Please come by and look at our collection. By the end of February we will be donating any unclaimed items to a local charity. So please come and look!
Leader in Me #6 - Synergizing
"Habit 6: Synergize" is one of the key principles from Stephen Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," which is also adapted for students in "The Leader in Me" program. Here are the key points of Habit 6:
Synergy Defined: Synergy is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It's about combining individual strengths, perspectives, and talents to create something greater together.
Valuing Differences: Synergy involves appreciating and leveraging the unique strengths and perspectives that each individual brings to the table. It's about recognizing that diversity can lead to better and more creative solutions.
Teamwork and Cooperation: Habit 6 emphasizes the importance of working collaboratively in a team. Instead of working independently, individuals are encouraged to join forces, share ideas, and contribute to a collective effort.
Open-mindedness: To achieve synergy, it's essential to be open-minded and willing to consider different viewpoints. This involves active listening, valuing others' opinions, and being receptive to new ideas.
Problem-Solving Through Collaboration: Synergy is particularly useful in problem-solving. By bringing together different perspectives and skills, a group can come up with solutions that may not have been possible if each person had worked on the problem individually.
Creating Win-Win Solutions: The focus is on finding solutions that benefit everyone involved. This approach contrasts with win-lose or lose-lose mentalities, promoting cooperation and mutual benefit.
Effective Communication: Clear and effective communication is crucial for synergy. Sharing ideas, thoughts, and information openly helps in building understanding and fostering collaboration.
Positive Energy and Enthusiasm: Synergizing often involves a positive and enthusiastic approach to working with others. This positive energy can inspire creativity and create a more enjoyable and productive work environment.
By practicing Habit 6, students and their families can enhance their effectiveness and achieve better results by leveraging the strengths of each team member in a collaborative and harmonious way.

New Health/Covid Guidelines Announced
The CDPH and Cal/OSHA have made some significant changes to the time a person (student and adult) must remain out of work or school when COVID positive. Please review the new guidelines below:
As of 1/9/24, a Covid positive person (student and adult) can return to work/school 24 hours from the day of symptoms or a C+ test result with improved symptoms and having been fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medication for at least 24 hours.
Adults are still required to wear a mask through day 10, for students it is optional.
Attendance Goal is 95%
- We have a huge goal this school year to have every student achieve the HERO Award (Here Everyday Ready & On-time) by being at school at least 95% of the time. We know that student who miss an excessive amount of days (more than 10% of the school year have a greater chance of falling behind their peers academically.
- Students are to stay home when sick, but can only miss up to nine school days to still meet our 95% goal.
- Back in September it was announced to all students that if we meet this goal at the end of the year, students will be able to duct tape Mr. Peel to a wall and through cream pie at him. Please help your child be successful by having them in school everyday, and help them achieve the goal of taping Mr. Peel to a wall!
- Make school attendance a priority. Talk to your child about the importance of showing up to school on time, everyday.
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
- Try to schedule medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session. Bring them to school before and after appointments if a middle-of-the-day appointment is necessary.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselor, or other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
